frontboat Posted September 18, 2019 Posted September 18, 2019 I started using a fuel additive on my 87 R22-e and wondering if anybody has used any additives and found it useful or a waste of money. Reason: I was having intermittent loss of power; no rhyme or reason to when it happened; sometimes when I started up other times, just on the road. I did some googling and saw something about injector cleaners. Especially Texaco Techron which had their patented "Techron is a detergent based on PEA, polyeter amine. It is a complex synthetic molecule that will basically 'loosen' and 'solve' deposits in your fuel system. " Being in the great northland I couldn't find it but in my local CTC store I found something with that PEA in it and started using it. Whether it is a placebo effect or not, I haven't had the power loss and it seems peppier and better gas mileage. I have not really calculated these things and as I said it could be just anecdotal or placebo effect (not that I am worried- it it works by some dark magic I am happy.) AT this point I am assuming it is like viagra for my 130,000 mile rig! Thoughts? Quote
WME Posted September 18, 2019 Posted September 18, 2019 The local cheap gas station is about 4 blocks from my house, so thats what I use. About 2x a year the car gets a bottle of Techron. At the beginning of the RV season the MH gets 2x bottles, big fuel tank. After many years still good. Quote
linda s Posted September 18, 2019 Posted September 18, 2019 I use Techron too. Gas is dirty. Clean it up Linda S Quote
AtlantaCamper Posted September 18, 2019 Posted September 18, 2019 Thanks for the tip. FYI, Advance Auto has it on special (two for price of one) until 9-25-19. I'll pick some up and run it through. Quote
jjrbus Posted September 18, 2019 Posted September 18, 2019 I am a 100% firm believer that all the additives are snake oil, Got money in your pocket Lucas has a product to remove it. Well not 100%, I have seen Marvel Magic Mystery oil work wonders and even I add Techron on occasion. Quote
tstockma Posted October 8, 2019 Posted October 8, 2019 (edited) "Snake oil" is a funny term - the poster child of phony product advertising. Supposedly to help skin, memory & thinking, a true panacea - good for what ails ya. Actual snake oil is loaded with omega-3. Which these days is pretty highly regarded, last I checked. Now 'tis true that most snake oil sold in the old days was mineral oil, not a speck of snake in it... Edited October 8, 2019 by tstockma Quote

Maybe a difference of old days, being the 40s and 50s or the late 1800s. Quote

Maineah Posted October 9, 2019 Posted October 9, 2019 In the supply end of an injector is a very fine mesh it will plug up before the junk even gets inside pretty common on modern snowmobiles because of gas cans used to fill the tanks. Early "crack" type injectors did have issues with junk causing a altered spray pattern. I don't know but either I'm lucky or I have found the source of gasoline that actually is well filtered I have never had injector issues in any thing I have ever owned in the past million miles. Only "additive" I use is kerosine in my tractor to keep the diesel from gelling at 15 below! Quote
frontboat Posted October 9, 2019 Author Posted October 9, 2019 I think snake oil had herion, morphine and/or cocaine added to give it some bite. as I said I am happy with a placebo effect Quote
moses195 Posted October 15, 2019 Posted October 15, 2019 Sea Foam from walmart. Best $8 you can spend. Also, 5 ounces in the crankcase 200-300 miles before an oil change has cut my oil burning by 50%, that was just 1 time! You can read for years about this stuff. Quote
frontboat Posted October 15, 2019 Author Posted October 15, 2019 Good to hear. I have seen it mentioned but thought the name was weird but I will give it a gander. always thought it was just a marine product based on its name. Or was just for Dolphins Quote
jjrbus Posted October 15, 2019 Posted October 15, 2019 Sea Foam was originally marketed for out board engines, thus the Sea Foam name. Quote
