Well I'm back with another question. I've been trying to get my Warrior ready for a road trip and been going down the list of things to do to made sure my vacation is trouble free. I replaced old deep cell with a new one, changed oil in the generator although it looked clean it was over filled when I checked it. When I finally fired it up it smoked pretty bad but seemed to clear up the longer I ran it. But I also found out the muffler was rusted out and very loud. Well I removed it and took it to the local small engine shop and they can't find the right replacement muffler. I've been searching the internet but no luck yet. So I thought I'd ask if anyone on here would have an idea where I might find one. It's a Kohler model 2.5CMZ part number PA-228174 Thanks.

Your talking about a generator that hasn't been made in many years. They used to have some mufflers that would fit on Jack's small engines website but they don't seem to have them anymore. I have heard of people using a motorcycle muffler. Just found a website with some Kohler mufflers. Not exactly like ours but close. Measure and see if any will fit.

Your generator has a Tecumseh TVM140 engine and Tecumseh used to provide the mufflers. That engine company is out-of-business. There are some aftermarket replacements around.

It baffles me why Kohler - who makes some pretty good engines - was willing to sell anything with grossly inferior Tecumseh engines installed. I guess the price was right.

I totally agree with you as far as Tecmseh engines being junk. It wasn't till after I bought my RV that I learned Kohler had stuck their name on it. Would I still have bought it knowing that ahead of time? Absolutely it's a great little camper. In the future I'll be replacing the built in gen with a new one but for now I'm going to try and get by with this one thus the search for a muffler. If I already had a carrier on the back I would just go a head and buy a portable one to get by for now.

Tecumseh eng was all good on my 99 sears lawn mower but the reast of the mower was crap got rid of all of it a while ago. you might check junk lawnmowers at the shops might find a workable one

My brother sandblasted the old one and it's not rusted all the way thru so we are going to patch it with some stuff from auto zone and give it a shot. I doubt the engine will out last the patch job but we'll see.

I think Tecumseh-Lauson-Power Products was the first US company to build a successful vertical shaft small engine. As I recall, Wisconsin tried it and it was a miserable failure. I also think Kohler tried it briefly in the early 70s and also dropped it quickly. All that remained was Briggs & Stratton and Tecumseh. I suspect when Kohler got a patent on building a vertical-shaft RV generator the Tecumseh was all there around worth using. It looks like Kohler designed it specifically for a Winnebago RV in 1985. That looks like a LeSharo on Kohler's patent application. Kohler stoppped payng for their patent rights in 1997 and gave them up.

The TVM140 engine used in the Kohler generator is basically the same medium-frame 5-7 horse vertical engine used in many 60s-70s riding mowers like Snapper and Ariens sold.

That Tecumseh engine probably has a 1" OD steel pipe coming out of the engine that runs down to the muffler. If the muffler is bad - I'd get some stainless-steel flexible exhaust tubing and then you can remote mount a muffler anywhere you want. Just need a muffler with a 1" inlet.

I've often wondered why more manufacturers don't pay much attention to smaller RV generators. I know that when I was working on boats, Northern Lights out of Seattle made very quiet generators. There also were people in that area that made "hush boxes" for regular old noisy generators. The generators (4 and 6 cylinder models!) were quiet enough that one could have a conversation while standing right next to the "hush box". The technology for quiet operation in a Toyhome is certainly there, but I think that enough space for the required insulation is not.

Don't think so. Onan was bought by Cummings Diesel in 1992.

Tecumseh engines were also used in lots of snowblowers. They are horizontal shaft but a muffler may work.
