vtchris
Burnt valve on #6, mechanic says $2500 for valve job. $6000 for new re-manufactured Jasper engine which comes with 3yr/100k mile warrantee. What would you do?
Derek up North
Make sure you check the fine print with Jasper. I'm not sure, but it might exclude motorhomes.
Derek up North
There's nothing on here, but a Search in the Yahoo Group will give you some reading about the Jasper Rebuild. Just Search for 'Jasper' and ignore the posts about Alberta and Ghosts.

I checked on the warrantee, thanks for the heads up, it hadn't occurred to me, but all is well, warranty covers as long as gvw doesn't exceed 17K. It is a done deal, bought and charged for.....I go on Monday for the work. Thanks for all the advice.

Maineah
Chris have the head gaskets been done? Toyota in many cases has been covering head gasket replacements that may save you a LOT of labor if you have the valves done at the same time worth a try. elderthewelder
I am going to buy a rebuilt 22re in the near future, either going with Oregon Engine Rebuilders, or SunWest Automotive Sunwest has them on sale now for $1385 for a long block with new head and RV cam http://spokane.craigslist.org/pts/2142909000.html http://www.sunwestautomotiveengines.com/lb-toyota.html Oregon sells them on ebay with a lifetime warranty http://oregonengines.net/

I also bought the napa kit from them that had radiator hoses, belts, and all that. I rebuilt my starter and alternator while I had them out. It's easy to take out and put in. Here I am sticking it in and here is the mostly done engine and me rambling . Kim
deprivation
$2500 for a valve job? Find a new mechanic. You can ger an excellent, new OEM head for four or five-hundred bucks or you can get the head machined, with new valves for the same price. You can get a head cheaper than that, but you get what you pay for. A decent shop can get the old head out and the new head in six to eight hours tops. And six grand for an engine swap is super-insane. Get some more estimates. EDIT - I didn't see that you had a V6. Different animal than a 22re. Never mind me! Derek up North
Yes, there was no mention of the engine being a V6 in the thread. Sorry, I knew from other Threads and should have mentioned it.

Tom W
I done them on the v6 I thought it was a pita getting the crossover tube between the exhaust manifolds is a matter of some luck and skinned knuckles if you can't get it off in the veh the eng would have to be slid forward or removed and their is a bunch of stuff to come off the top, unless it would be possible to remove both Hds at the same time, anyone that says this is a piece of cake let them do it. Gulfstream Greg
Seems like the result of a burnt valve can be a couple of things, a bad injector running a cylinder lean or a valve seat that wore prematurely and eventually leaked or 3 a sticking valve. Depending on mileage I think I would have opted for the valve job. Curious, is the shop going to put in new injectors? Is it known why the valve burnt?
