I have a 1991 Toyota Itasca, 6 cyl with 120,000 m on it, and in very good shape if I may say so!

I note that in reading the Toyota manual that my gas tank has a 13 gallon capacity which, given my RV travel plans, is very modest. Given where I will be travelling, I do not expect gas stations as often as here in Canada or the US.

I found an online supplier who offers 17 gallon tanks for this vehicle which sorely tempts me as I am a bit reluctant to put 10 gallons in Jerry cans on the back bumper.

Has anyone had any experience in putting in a bigger gas tank? Any advice?

Many thanks!

I second that. The Toyota brochures from your year show only the 17.2 gallon tank being available on the extra long, 137 inch, dual wheel cab and chassis. Just know that all of our gas gauges seem to show empty at around 13 gallons. Don't know why

When the gas gauge gets close to empty, my wife's voice starts getting loader by the mile. I keep telling her that we have a 17 gallon tank and at 13 mpg we are good for at least 220 miles. If I am not in a gas station at 190 miles I need ear muffs or I will be deaf very quickly. She also forgets that I have 5 gallons of fuel on the back bumper in case of an emergency.

Contact a member of the forum that goes by MAXXFabrication, I am pretty sure that he produces large capacity or auxilary tanks for Toyhoouses.

Brian, Maxxfabrication hasn't been on this site or any other that I can find for over 2 years.

I have suggested trying these tanks for years but no one has tried it yet that I know of. Nissan D21 tank 21.1 gallons or a 93 T100 tank, 24.3 gallons. Both similar shape to our regular tanks with filler tube on same side. Pete if you want to try here are some T100 tanks near you for cheap

I note that in reading the Toyota manual that my gas tank has a 13 gallon capacity which, given my RV travel plans, is very modest.

The late 60s-early 70s trucks had 13 gallon tanks, then went to 16 gallon late 70s and on to 17 gallons after that. Even a few in the 80s-90s had 19 gallon tanks. I don't know which manual you are reading but 13 gallons for your rig is incorrect. My 1988 with the 17 gallon tank reads pretty low when it still has 5-6 gallons of gas left in it. Since I (we) drive and camp in very rural areas with few gas stations - I used to fill up, or "top off" my tank anytime I saw a gas station. Now - after I added a 5 gallon portable tank to the back - I've gotten braver and will drive in very rural areas with the gas gauge down to 1/4 or less. My record was 11 gallons at a fill before I put the extra 5 gallon tank in back. Now - last trip - I got a fill of 15 gallons (tank needle read empty, more-or-less). I already know, 100% for sure that my tank holds a little over 17 gallons. I had it out, put in a new fuel pump and rewired the sender, and checked total capacity. My 1978 Chinook came with a 16 gallon tank and with that - I added a permanent mount 15 gallon extra tank (from a Jeep CJ). Fits nicely but a lot of work. Adding a 5 gallon portable military-style tank to the back is MUCH easier - like in my 1988.

My 1978 standard cab has a 12.1 gal capacity. A long bed 76-78 has a 16.1 gal capacity. Year 1981-82 saw standard tank go to 13.7 . Long bed stayed at 16.1.

1984-85 began the 17.2 gal standard tank. Although a large type was available that held 19.3 gallons.

I realize your vehicle is much newer

The Land Cruisers had much larger tanks than pickups. You may want to research this as a means of getting a larger tank.

As I'm sure my figures will be closely checked for discrepancies, the 1974 (18R-C) came with a 13.7 gal tank. :-)

get a 2.5 gallon or so gas can, drive till you run out of gas. Then go fill it up noting mileage so you can deduct how much gas you burned - I would use about 14 MPG for the math.

I et you have the 17.2 gallon gas tank.

I realize this is a really old topic but one that comes up often. My brother SpeedHarrop

https://tinyurl.com/ytdhcsk4 is working on my rig to put the 27 gal. tank from his 1980 Toyota flatbed truck into my 1993 Dolphin. I encouraged him to join this group to document just how this is done.

This is going to replace my 17 Gal tank in my '93 Dolphin. This should get me out of California to buy gas LOL.
