Scott iv
Any tricks on replacing the seal? Oil leak at where driveshaft meets the transfer case.
linda s
Since we don't have 4x4's do you mean driveshaft to differential? That would be the pinion seal Linda S
linda s
Or do you mean driveshaft to transmission extension housing. There is a thread here somewhere that addresses that fix. Linda S
Scott iv
Yes, extension housing, Thanks.
linda s
Well there are apparently a lot of threads referring to the extension housing. I'd rather not have to scroll through them all so if you type extension housing into the search box you can go through them and see if you can use the info there. Looks complicated. Sounds like bushings inside the housing need to be replaced and extension housing needs to be removed to get to them. I also see a comment that a tranny shop has the tools to do it without removal Linda S This should take you right there Showing results for 'extension housing'. - Toyota Motorhome Discussion Board
thewanderlustking
I think it is in Sprungo’s thread. But I won’t swear on that. wo
Maineah
If the trans seal is leaking more than likely the yoke bushing is bad. Just replacing the seal is not a good plan, the bushing is the support for the transmission output shaft. The early 4 speed automatics governor was attached to the output shaft and the sealing rings ran on the aluminum transmission housing. When the yoke bushing went bad the weight was transferred to the governor and it wore groves in the case caused erratic shifting at the very least. The repair required a reamer to over size the case bore and a bushing to be installed in the case it's self. Yep you guessed it to do this the entire innards of the transmission had to come out. I did dozens of those years ago.
Scott iv
How hard is it to get that bushing out and replaced?
Scott iv
anyone know if there is enough room in the housing to add a second bushing; push the bushing that is there further in and add the new one in front of it?
Maineah
4 hours ago, Scott iv said: How hard is it to get that bushing out and replaced? You will wreck it getting it out. The easiest way is remove the tail stock. A bushing driver is the best way. Take the tail stock to a transmission shop or machine shop won't take them long to replace it. Scott iv
Update regarding this repair: Was able to remove the driveshaft, tail housing, and replace the bushing and seal. The old bushing had no noticeable signs of wear other than where I gouged it tapping it out. The yoke was in perfect condition. Prior to removing I grabbed hold of the driveshaft to feel for play and felt none but replaced it anyway at recommendation. The seal was like plastic. The rubber parts were hard and cracked. My camper now has 72,000 miles on it. I hope the replacement bushing works as well as the original. I regret removing the original as there was nothing wrong with it. Anyway.
