moalaska
i got a 79 Mini Mirage I think 18 or 19 footer with the not dual, dual axle. I found a replacement I will pick up at some point. In the mean time, I get a noticeable clunking from the mid/rear of the motorhome on acceleration and deceleration. Like a u-joint. but I pulled the driveshafts and u-joints don't have any play. I filled the center support bearing with 3m window weld so that should eliminate that as a problem. So what could this thumping clunking be? something in the rear diff, or is my death axle about to live up to its name? Also, sometimes it clunks, and sometimes it doesn't, but it is drivetrain related for sure.
Odyssey 4x4
Try crawling under it and turning the drive shaft in front of the rear diff back and forth and see how much play it has in it.
moalaska
I don't think it's a backlash issue it's a repetitive thump thump thump thump.
Derek up North
If all else fails, jack up and support rear axle and put it in gear and good investigating. Safely.
linda s
Thump, thump when driving is usually caused by a bad tire. Belt separating makes the tire not round so it thumps. Linda S
moalaska
Not a tire, only on accel and deceleration in gear, coasting or neutral no thump clunk. I'll just have to pull tires I guess and inspect axle
WME
About the only thing left is a lose wheel or slop in the ring and pinion
Maineah
Without removing the drive shaft there is no way to tell if a U joint is locked up. If there is no play it may be because it full of rusted up needle bearings.
moalaska
Like I originally stated, I already pulled the driveshaft and checked ujoints.
