The wrong gas cap can cause a lot of trouble. I had an old Saab, someone replaced the cap with one from the wrong year, non vented instead of vented. The pump crushed the fuel tank.

K

Yes that did happen some times several decades ago.

seriously?  mechanical pump?  I can't see any electric pump pulling so much vacuum it would collapse a tank.  except that we have someone here who had it personally happen, i'd call that an urban legend.

It won't. An old mechanical pump would.

the proper cap has a check valve to let air INTO the tank.  The charcoal canister along with the TPP (a little valve) allows excess vapors to be drawn into the intake.

I bought a locking cap at wallies world. I bought one that fit the standard pickup -same year.  Per my maint manual the evap (evaporation)  systems are identical.
