Upgrading my 1986 Toyota Horizon ST Camper RWD

Recommended Posts

Looking to do some upgrades to my rig. Would love your suggestions on Front/Rear bumper, full roof rack to support gear/multiple paddle boards, solar panel options that best for living off the grid for a few days, Sway Bar, one that’s really important- a 4-5” Lift Kit. Thanks in advance9D1652CF-B0F9-4CF6-B5CD-3CAB67DFCC5C.jpeg.c717309ebd9e41bb95e41191988716c4.jpeg

Cheapest heavy duty front bumpers come in at about $650. The rear bumper would have to be welded on and you would have to determine the width of the camper and search for something appropriate. Not something you can buy off the shelf.

Roof rack again must be made to fit. Attachments need to be directly above side walls to limit holes in roof and for support. Your roof is not that strong. Even with a rack you need to not overload it.

Rack on the roof is going to limit places to mount solar. There are a few portable solar panels that fold up. You can move them into the sun and put them away when done. Better to park in the shade anyway.

Google rear sway bar for your year truck and several will come up. Not too expensive.

Lift? NO Your kids are in this camper. A 4 inch lift with your already high center of gravity is going to make the camper unwieldy on the road. Dangerous

OK a little info,, You can reduce the electrical load or get a bigger solar setup. Better yet do both.

Replace ALL the lights with LEDs. 2 incandescent lamps use as much as a coach full of LEDs.

100w of solar and a 100AH battery will give you extended stays. 200w of solar and 200AH of batteries will make you independent. I see you have 2 kids, now days kids use LOTS of power. A basic rule of solar is 1w of panel for 1 AH of battery

Check Ebay and see how big 200w of panels are, then decide portable or roof mount. Portable let's you park in the shade and the panels in the sun. Roof mounted panels are less likely to disappear.
