MORE??? speed witha Toy M/H. Surley you jest. Going faster doesn't mean lower ratio gears, it means more HP.

Just learn to cruse at the speed of Smell.

I had the Sunrader up to 90 going through Palm Springs in rush hour traffic (I got into a "I can go fast too you little sports rabbit" mode).

I am thinking about droping the gearing down to 4.56:1 to keep me from doing this again :headbonk:

How fast do you want to go?

I'd really only like to go 75 on a decent freeway. We are planning some trips from WA to UT and there are some loooooong flat spots between here and there and it would be nice to cruise a little higher. I can get about 60ish right now.

What's the best way to get some hp for not too much dough? I've looked into a larger cat converter and exhaust, but don't think it's worth the 300 bucks. I did order a kn intake 57-9008, though. I plan to put that in next week.

My sunrader is a V-6 auto shorty (18'). I had no problems cruising at 70-75 through Texas and Oklahoma where this was the posted speed limit. It has the stock 4.10:1 rear end gearing and stock exhaust. I've replaced the stock intake and air cleaner with a Downey off road one and I had the ECU reprogrammed by JET performance. Both of these minor improvements added a few ponies.

Like I said, I have had it up over 90 a few times but only for short bursts (passing). Anything over 75 is white knuckle time and not much fun.

I can say that fuel economy goes down drastically at a steady 70-75 mph. The 3 tanks of fuel in that stretch gave me 8.1, 7.4, and 8.3 MPG. Keeping it at 60-65 yields double the MPG (13-15).

I must admit that I'm a bit jelous of your v6, I've got the 22re, and it's great, but those 7 hour drives turn into 8 or 9 hours. I hesitate to say it for fear of getting lynched, but I'm not terribly concerned with gas mileage. It's just tough with a wife and 2 toddlers when you have to go so slow........

I also have a 1988 Toyota 4x4 pickup truck that I bought new. I had the dealer install TRD headers and a TRD cam before I took delivery. I dumped the stock exhaust and have a 2 1/2" free flow with a Vette catalytic and a flowmaster. I've had the ECU reprogrammed by JET performance and tossed out the stock intake/air-cleaner and replaced it with a free flow Downey.

All of this comes at a price (both monetary and longevity). Besides the additional cost I incurred I have blown a head gasket at 65k miles and have a bad knock in the crank now (at 80k miles).

You may want to look at swapping out a small block V-8. This is a common thing for the Toyota 4x4 crowd and there are several companies that make complete kits so that it is a no brainer swap.

The all aluminum Buick V-8 would be my 1st choice (this is what is in my 1988 Range Rover except it was made under license from GM by Rover.... nice and light and lots of torque) http://www.toymike.com/misc/1988Engine.jpg

Hey Mike great engine for the Toyota. The complete engine weights about 300# (I had a TR8) only draw back is the bell housing it is weird so just about any thing would involve an adapter plate nothing GM made except the Buick 3.5 would fit. Years back we put them in the MGC because the 6 was problematic but it involved some adapter engineering to mate up to the trans. Rover fixed the problems GM had with that engine and they make great swaps.
