Black Tank Leak, Yikes

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone!

We just ran into a sudden holy-moly black tank leak from our 1986 Sunland Express. It looks like it’s been leaking for some time and just managed to get through some… layers? A previous repair?

I am so not sure what I’m looking at, but I attached some pictures below.

Any ideas? I’m thinking the tank is ABS because the pipes appear glued rather than clamped. I have several patch/repair options but am wondering if I need to replace the whole tank. Hoping not— or at least to buy a couple months before replacing!

Tomorrow will be all about scrubbing and cleaning the leak to see what’s just gross dried sewage, but I would love some feedback / things to look for that might help point me in the right direction.

Thank you!

Yes it can be fixed. I've described how I fixed mine many times on this site. Search ABS slurry and go through my posts. If you need more info just ask.

You are the best, Linda. I’ve saved your posts.

I’m just a little nervous about the white coating that’s peeling off — maybe a previous owner repair? It just seems to be a continuous layer over the entire tank — I can’t find any edge where it begins. Could it be something specific / necessary to worry about?

Peel off whatever you can and sand the surface smooth. The ABS you put over it will seal everything.

Just looked at my first post about this repair method. I know I fixed my black tank the summer before.

That would make it 2010. 13 years later it has never leaked.
