Mike and Joyce
We recently changed the transmission fluid from our 1986 Toyota Dolphin automatic. In research Mike found 6.9 quarts was capacity for this transmission. Mike drained out 2 quarts. When putting in fresh fluid, the dipstick tube overflowed at 4 quarts. We redrained and put in 2 quarts and are showing full on the dipstick. Anyone have any input on this?
fred heath
Did you take into consideration the torque converter capacity? This is all part of the total fluid number. Just draining the pan doesn’t remove fluid from the torque converter. You’ll probably find that is the difference.
WME
The pan holds a bit over 2 quarts, the torque converter holds the rest. The typical owner DIY fluid change is drain 2 qts replace 2 qts, drive around a bit. Do this 3 or 4 times. I used this method, then every other engine oil change I changed 2 qts in the transmission. Another version is pull a transmission cooler line and stick it in a bucket. Start the engine and add fluid at the same rate its draining out, This works best with 2 people.
