Big Rolling Turd
1991, six lug. The Toyota service manual shows using a spring tension gauge (which I do not have) to set preload at .9 - 2.2 lbs. Is there a ballpark torque setting for the nut or any other way I can do this without the spring tension gauge? I searched the internet and found all kinds of procedures, all over the place, some pretty extreme and bizarre. (Would a fish weight scale work? lol)
Maineah
Tighten it with light pressure back off till you can get the cotter pin back in. There has to be clearance in order for the grease to do its job.
fred heath
You want to tighten the nut securely to set the bearing on the spindle. Then back the nut off until loose, then hand tighten. The cotter pin should fit in the hole. If it doesn’t, tighten the nut enough to line up the first slot in the castle nut that aligns with the spindle hole. There has to be some movement for the grease to do its job.
