My husband&I are recent owners of  '86 Toyota Sunland Motorhome,  we've replaced old shocks with Belstein shocks but it still doesn't help with smooth ride, every lil bump we hit, makes a big thump sound in back end. Also, husband checked muffler which was making a rattling sound, needs a new one & he's wondering whether he should have catalytic converter replaced also. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

New shocks and bushings, check good stuff.

Have you looked at the bushings in the rear springs?? 30 year old rubber bushings are usually junk, they will let the rear spring actually move and not flex as they are supposed to.

Mid level mech skills need to replace them. New OEM type will be better than what you have, best is the poly bushings that the off roaders use.

I don't think you have to replace the catalytic unless it's bad

because they either  work or don't. Very expensive too

They do degrade with time and heat and will eventually crumble apart blocking the entire exhaust system causing all kinds of fun issues.

If it’s working fine you can continue using it.  If it fails it’s easy enough to replace at a later time by a muffler shop.
