  1. Rad, Thank you so much for your very helpful suggestions. I am getting some factual information for a Toyo-trip down Baja and from what I see, the dangers and challenges are minimal. FWIW: I have been to and lived in about 45 foreign countries and have traveled the length of Mexico many times in years past. I have never had a serious problem in all my travels. The biggest problem I ever had was a case of diarrhea and petty thievery. Everything else has been wonderful experiences. Opinions, and second, and third hand info isn't worth too much. First hand info is worth it's weight in gold. And yes, I too have dealt (successfully) with corrupt officials in Mexico. I am familiar with La Mordida. Thanks for your help!
  2. No one mentioned it yet so I'll be the first. Those discount parts look pretty nice too! Thanks!
  3. I got my plastic curtain at Wally World in the fabric dept. It comes in a big roll and you buy it by the foot. It's much heavier than shower curtain and consequently would probably last much longer.
  4. Mine had a 'privacy' curtain when I got it. The problem was that I could not see directly behind and out the back window when driving. So I added a heavy, clear, vinyl curtain that is flexible enough that I can flip it up onto the top bunk when I don't need it. It works great for cooling the cab in the summer and heating it in the winter. I still have the 'privacy' curtain for use when parked.
  5. Debbit, In addition to my Dolphin, I have your ideal RV. It's a Westy (73)- It's a Toyota- It's two RVs in one! How about a 73' Westy with a Toyota engine? That's right. It has a 1976 Toyota 1600cc engine (2TC). The radiator is mounted in the engine compartment out of sight and it will move! When asked what I have in the bus, I just tell them (honestly) that it's a Toyota Hemi.
  6. Has anyone traveled into Mexico lately? Is it safe? What were your experiences and where exactly did you go? What suggestions or advice do you have? Did you travel alone or in a group?
  7. John, I topped off the reservoir. When I turn the ignition to 'on' the brake light is 'on'. When I start it, the light goes out. I then pull the emergency brake and still no brake light. I've never seen a cruise control light. When I say it is not coming on, I mean that it is not working. Pictures are attached (I hope).
  8. John, Thanks for the suggestions. The E brake light does not come on when it is applied. The brake fluid reservoir is getting very near the 'min' line but has not caused the light to come on. Do I need to add some brake fluid anyway? If you still need pics, I'll try to get them loaded. Where do I go from here? It sounds like we are on the right track. I'm amazed at your wizardry! Thanks again
  9. My cruise control on my 87 Dolphin will not turn on. Is there a fuse for the CC? If so, where is it located? There's no info in the owners manual about a CC fuse. What additional troubleshooting measures can I do to locate the problem?
  10. In a motorhome fire, the propane tank will get so hot that it will create enough internal pressure to open the pop off valve. At that point, there is a very large whoosh of flames when the gas is released. Then the pressure in the tank decreases to the point of closing the pop off valve and stops the violent burning. When the pressure goes up again, the cycle repeats itself. Rarely does a gasoline tank explode. If the tank is intact and the gas cap remains on, there is actually little danger. Those massive explosions you see on TV and in the movies are just so much fantasy. Years ago the Ford Pinto was prone to explosions when the car was rear ended. That was because the tank was located too near the back of the car. When hit, as in a rear end collision, it usually ruptured the tank, sending gasoline everywhere. Friction sparks from the collision did the rest. Check out some of the RV fires on You Tube and you will see when the propane pop off valves open and close.
  11. They have taken their 'food' service to the ultimate level of recycling! At least it tastes like it.
  12. Which is the better product to use: putty tape or silicone sealant? Or are they equally good?
  13. FWIW: Sounds like a broken cable to me too. It should be an easy replacement if you get the correct cable.
  14. Never underestimate the greed and gullibility of people. One person out of 10,000 still makes it profitable for the scammer. That's why scammers scam. It's easy and its profitable.
  15. Wow! Do you think she would give me a package deal on the motorhome AND the BMW? This gets better by the minute! Keep 'em coming in!
  16. I just found a craigslist ad in Dothan, Al. for a pristine, 1990 Dolphin with 25,000 kilometers. The price? $2770. Look it up. Does this sound fishy to you? If it is legit, I hope one of our members grabs it quick. Better look before you leap though.
  17. Seems to me that I just saw the innards for $400 somewhere recently. It may have been PPL. I would do some more serious searching.
  18. I built a box bumper for the rear. It is 4"x4" x 3/16". I then welded brackets to the bumper and the brackets to the frame. Strong enough for my needs because I won't be doing any heavy hauling. That tin foil stock bumper is scary. All those multi-tasking tailgaters could be in my front seat in short order with the stock bumper protecting my backside. Nicehobbits: If you make it back out of Mexico, please give us a trip report. I've avoided Mexico for the past 15 years. Is that foolish of me? I would be interested in a firsthand account. Anyone else with recent Mexico experience? Thanks.
  19. Stephen, Great pictures. I just repaired mine with the West System and it seems to have worked well. I just had a very few hairline cracks in mine though. I left the pan in during the fix. But since you have yours out, have you considered fiberglassing the bottom of the pan? Then use the West System to clean up the topside cracks. After replacing the plywood base, that should hold up well and should support a good amount of weight also. If necessary, you could put a double layer of glass on for even more strength. Good luck and please keep us posted on your project.
  20. 41,000 miles and needed a new transmission??? I'm sure that wasn't cheap! Hmmmmm. I think I'll keep my Dolphin with 72000 on it. I trust it.
  21. Has anyone had problems with the now extinct Polybutyl (PB) pipe in their RVs? Is it difficult to re-plumb with something else? What kind of pipe is most appropriate for a re-plumb? PVC? Copper?
  22. Gee. I recently acquired my 87' Dolphin and had it tagged here in Mississippi. It cost me $25 for the tag and that is for a LIFETIME. I'll never buy another tag for this vehicle. It qualifies for an 'antique' tag (over 25 years old). Also, gasoline is $3.08 per gallon at Sams Club in Gulfport today.
