  1. I just got the cheep Walmart one, I think its 10 ft, a slight twist locks it in place. don't loose the rubber o-ring gasket or you'll have a little drip when your draining. I dump the black tank first, then kind of walk the hose, lifting it as I go to empty the hose. Then do the same with the gray to rinse the hose. John Mc 88 Dolphin 4 Auto
  2. I meant leveling as referenced to the frig or the truck: i.e. having the frig level side to side is more important than have it leveled front to back. To get the frig leveled side to side, means the truck must be leveled front to back. John Mc 88 Dolphin 4 Auto
  3. Is it consuming coolant? but I suspect its just rust colored condensation in the tail pipe. cooling fluctuation could be thermostat or coolant level low. make sure the coolant level is at the top of the radiator. run the engine at high RPM with the cap off and the heater full HOT. top off the fluid level. be carefull as it will squirt out if you let off the gas. Put the cap on before you lower the RPM. Make sure the overflow bottle id about 1/2 full. John Mc 88 Dolphin 4 Auto
  4. Yes, they are both needed. The lower vent is an air intake and should be located at the bottom of the frig.. The upper vent must be at or above the condensor coil thats at the top of the frig. Download the installation drawings for the frig, make sure you provide clearance and air flow. Dometic 2193 JOhn Mc 88 Dolphin 4 Auto
  5. The truck has a body connector rear left, underneath, all the way in the back.. That is where mine are spliced in. John Mc 88 Dolphin 4 Auto
  6. ^^^ DITTO, Also spent one night at the Snow Park parking place at the top of the summit in January. Make the steep climbs in 2nd (or 1st if need be), use the turn outs if traffic starts backing up. Use the 4-way flashers to let the world know your driving a Toyhouse. John Mc 88 Dolphin 4 Auto
  7. You might get a flashlight and look under your couch, you'll see a thick power cord with what looks like a dryer plug on the end (It may have a adapter on it so it can be plugged into a standard wall outlet) There should be an outside door (shown in Linda's photo above) where the cord can be pulled out. John Mc 88 Dolphin 4 Auto
  8. Linda, are you referencing the truck or the frig? Reference the truck, mine is a lot more finicky with truck front to back than sideways. Your frig is obviously different than mine if its finicky the other way. I know they call the older frig (has a octagonal shaped sheet metal cover over the boiler, the newer models have a round cover) as being a lot more finicky on leveling. Bottom line, get a couple of those bubble level things and get the truck level front to back and sideways. :-) JOhn Mc 88 Dolphin 4 Auto
  9. ^^^ same as he said When your moving, not a factor, When your parked, AND operating the frig, your truck needs to be level front to back (side to side isnt as important) I have one of those bubble levels on the drivers door pillar, just above the shoulder harness attach point. when I'm parking, i'll move back and forth, or reposition, and try and get it within one mark. I've only had to use my leveling legos one time. I would say that the ammonia leaks is probably caused by old age, and not necessarily out of level. long term out of level operation usually causes crystallization inside the cooling unit and then it gets plugged up internally. If the frig is in good shape, doors, knobs, all the shelves, rubber door seal, etc. You might consider re-built cooling unit, If your misisng shelves, or the door rubber is shot, a new frig might be in order. ALSO - Depending how you use your Toyhouse, (plugged into shore power a lot) you may also consider a small dorm frig. John Mc 88 Dolphin 4 Auto
  10. On the 4 banger, if you can change plugs, you can adjust valves. Order the new valve gasket kit that has the two 1/2 moons and new rubber cover bolt bushings GASKET KIT Youll need a cheep set of feeler gauges Follow the instructions When you remove the valve cover, ods are good the four rubber bushings will NOT just pop out, the rubber will be hardened around the bolt and will need to be unscrewed. Prefer adjusting HOT, but cool will work I setmine at .007 (IN) and .011 (EX) cold Look at post #7 I did a basic how-to ROUGH IDLE set the crank at #1 TDC (Top dead center) you'll be able to adjust 1/2 the valves here, then rotate the crank 360 deg (note the cam only rotated 180 deg) and you can adjust the rest. Before I made any adjustments, I used the feeler to see where they were adjusted now. On mine the exhaust valves there was no clearence, the valves were actually being opened just a tiny bit. Thats what the problem was. Loosen the adjustor lock nut, then turn the adjuster screw loose a 1/4 turn, slide the feeler between the rocker and the valve, snug the screw and wiggle the feeler. It takes a little practice to get the screw snugged, then tighten the lock nut, and get the correct wiggle of the feeler. The feeler should not be loose where it slide easily, but it shouldn't be tight either. you want just a little resistance when moving the feeler. When adjusted, it may be a little difficult to get the feeler back in there between the rocker and the valve, but you should be able to get it in there and it should move with just a little resistance. To set your mind at ease - this isn't rocket science. if your off a little, not a big deal, i.e. if your trying for .007 cold, but you get .006 or .008 it will be OK. Heres why your adjusting valves. If they are too close (like mine were) then the normal expand/contract of the engine will cause the valves to open, stay open thus effecting compression and fuel charge. This will greatly effect exhaust valves, as they are designed to be cooled by two methods, thru the stem and into the guide, but just as important, they need to rest against the seat so heat can transfer from the valve and into the seat.. If the valve doesn't come into contact with the seat, this will cause "burn't valves. If they are to far open, the rockers will slam the valves open and closed like a hammer. This will be noisy and annoying (sound like a diesel), and in the very worst case, will mushroom the valve stem and hammer the valve seat on the head. this premature wearing the valve and seat. 11. Joe, good point. 6k for one in good shape is a very good deal. pull the heads, do a valve job, slap a new timing chain on that baby, and you'll be rady for another 100k. ('d rather do engine stuff than house stuff. As JD said, what does "shot" mean. This could be something as simple as a valve adjust (Pain in the butt on 6 cyl) , or a little more complicated like a burnt valve. but I would almost guess thats probably worst case. Take the VIN to a toyota dealer, see if the recall has ever been done (or was required) Then, if you don't want to do this yourself, find a good foreign car mechanic that knows about 1990 toyotas. WAG I suspect maybe 7 -900 for valve job and timing chain. John Mc 88 Dolphin 4 Auto
  12. Check the simple stuff first, vacuum hoses split, cracked, disconnected. PVC valve not stuck open (rare, but if its gunked up yes) How many miles on the truck? have the valeve ever been adjusted? I put my money on valve adjust, sounds like the way mine was, idle seemed a little rough, and would stall when I put it in gear. turned up idel speed and that took care of it for a few thousand miles. It got progressively worst and reached a point where there was no more idle adjust, and it was difficult to start as I'd have to give it gas until it warmed up, but even then it wasn't idling right. Mine had 88,000 miles on it and the valves have never been adjusted. John Mc 88 Dolphin 4 Auto
  13. Not a big deal if your able to do the work yourself. There was a re-call on some of the 6 cyl many years ago, I don't re-call what it was. John Mc 88 Dolphin 4 Auto
  14. I doubt a 78 has a canister? the tank may be just vented to atmosphere, and placing a sealed cap on it may be aggravating your problem. John Mc 88 Dolphin 4 Auto
  15. I wonder if the vent hose is kinked or plugged, and gas is trying to vent out the filler hose ( if you even have a vent hose) ALSO - Not sure about the year on your Chinook, I would think, If you have a charcoal canaster, your gas system should be sealed so all venting happens thru the canister.. if you don't have a canister, I suspect it would be vented. JD may have better info on this? JOhn Mc 88 Dolphin 4 Auto
  16. On my Dolphin - Clearance lights run off same circuit as tail, so if they work, fuse is probably OK. Look at ALL clearance lights to see if any work. This may be one of those times where it might be easier and faster to simply run a new wire, maybe :-) If all the clearance are daisy chained (they probably are), and none of them are on, but the tail lights are on. Might try this real quick: Mine has a clearance light at the bottom, all the way in the back, behind the rear tire. Maybe go underneith and see if you have any loos or broken wires as that may be the feed point. If you don't see anything obvious, you can do a temporary test, run a wire from that clearance light to 12 volts and see if they come on. If they do, you might be better off simply connecting the wire to the tail light circuit.. JOhn Mc 88 Dolphin 4 Auto
  17. Check local exhaust shops (not the franchise ones) I had new muffler and pipe on mine for $100. JOhn Mc 88 Dolphin 4 Auto
  18. If you want to go that way, get on NM26 in Demming and it cuts the corner to I-25, if you pick up I-25 in Las Cruces, you back track. I like going thru Alamogordo, I was stationed there in the 70's. When you get to Las Cruces, jump on US 70 (east) drive thru town, and head toward Alamogordo. When you get to the top of San Augustin pass, get your camera ready as this is the most beautiful scene looking out the east /s east. If you plan your trip right (or wrong) you'll get stopped on US 70 while they launch a rocket. (yes, they close the road about 2 hours before any launch) Plan on spending a few hours at White Sands National Monument, and drive out to the white sand dunes. Neat place to have lunch and just climb on top of a dune and sit there for an hour or two. When you get to Alamogordo, take US-54 toward Carrizozo/Vaughn/Santa Rosa, This is two lane, but is fast and enjoyable ride. Make sure to fillup with gas before leaving Alamogordo. NOTE - The Walmart at Alamogordo is a nice place to overnight. Its off the main drag and reasonable quite. John Mc 88 Dolphin 4 Auto
  19. Your going to do a couple climbs and operating in high altitude regardless of the route. I've traveled this several times a year. I always like to take a slightly different route. If I was trying to get there, and wasn't horribly interested in the scenery, I'd probably take this route. I-8 > I-10 > Las Cruses New Mexico > US70 > Alamogordo NM (stop by White Sands) > US54 > Santa Rosa NM > I-40 > I-44 > I-70 > I-75 I call this the southern route, Generally avoids climbs and snow. but you'll be in the HOT if your doing this in the summer. 20. If your getting brown sludge, I would drain, flush, and re-fill the system again.. When you refill, use the trick about someone revving the engine while you pour into the radiator, Keep in mind the heater must be on full blast, max heat and turn the blower on. Note on Thermostat - Look carefully at the thermostat, most will have an arrow with the words "toward radiator". Also - I think on the 22RE, its impossible to put it in upside down. (need to verify that) The spring side should be toward the engine. John Mc 88 Dolphin 4 Auro
  21. turn the heater aqnd blower on full blast. take the radiator cap off. Start the truck, get someone to rev it up and hold it at to about 1500-2000 rpm while you re-fill the radiator. Keep the engine running to get it hot, rev up the engine again and top off the radiator. (use caution as it may squirt out when you return the egine to idle. You should have heat coming out of the heater. Put the radiator cap on, make sure the overflow is about 1/2 full. John Mc 88 Dilphin 4 Auto
  22. Looks like the Isolator failed. Make sure you are using an Isolator and not a starter relay. They look identical. ALSO - I highly recommend installing the isolator vertically, with the terminals near the top. Some cheap isolators the plunger can drag and bind internally, If it's vertical, the plunger can't bind or drag. JOhn Mc 88 Dolphn 4 Auto
  23. The windows need to be removed and re-sealed. I seen a video somewhere that describes the process. When I did mine, I did not use butyl tape, I used a urethane based caulking , put a bead around the opening, put a bead around the window, then re-inserted the window. I'll post photos of this someday. JOhn Mc 88 Dolphin 4 Auto
