Is it possible that rear end gear oil could migrate from the third member and leak out of the point where the rear axle bolts to the rear hub. I found oil, defiantly not brake fluid.

Any help would be appreciated.

Common failure, the rear axle seals have failed. A FF 1 ton has 2 seals per side. The 2 per side axle bearings are packed just like the front wheel bearings they are NOT lubed by the rear axle oil. Fix is new seals and repack the bearings

I guess that is what I was getting at.  I would ensure the gear oil level in the third member is correct and check it every 200 miles or so. No big deal either the checking  or added adding gear oil. All I want to do is limp home and make the fix at home rather than in my father in laws drive way.

A couple of teaspoons of axle lube will make a huge mess all over the brakes. So check carefully and drive it home.

I would limp home AFTER verifying the differential is full.   I agree that your seals on that side are leaking.  The good news is they are relatively inexpensive.  If the brake shoes are soaked they will need to be changed.

Note that the larger seal is 2 sided.   The seals are available,
