Starting A Little Work

Hi again not been here for a while, a poor summer here in the UK means the camper hasn't been out much at all. So yesterday I decided to investigate a couple of small soft patches in the side walls above the cab, well as you can imagine the job just got bigger and bigger but I'm not too worried a good day should see both sides done.

Interesting to see that rot is an intentional problem. I am in Florida where a few months of the year we get amazing amounts of rain, so need to keep an eye on things. When I found a bit of rot on mine I learned that rot is a fungi and needs to be treated. I used antifreeze, but will not go on about it as have no idea what I am doing. A Google search will tell you what you need to know.

I also found that tapping on the wood will find rot. Solid dry wood will make a tap sound water logged wood will be more of a thunk or muffled sound.

So now you have me thinking about Pete's authentic Fish and Chips in Cape Coral. Jim

intentional?? international.

Well a bit more cleaning up then built a 2x3/4 frame and screwed it all up, I will dismantle and glue it all up tomorrow put insulation back in then a new panel. So far about 4 hours and £6 (about $10) then on to the other side.

Thanks for posting the photos and description of your repair job. I've got to do some similar work on my Warrior, so it's really helpful to see how different people approach these problems.

The thing that struck me was how flimsy the construction is, ok I know it's to save weight but virtually no framework and what is there is only 1x3/4 and all put together with staples.......... Millions of them.

So what started as investigating the two side walls has now spread to the whole front above the cab, in a way it actually makes the job a little easier. Instead of patching the sides it is going to be much easier to frame up and put a new bed base in which will become part of the structure. All the rot has been removed and ready for new timber tomorrow.

So a few hours and a few lengths of timber and everything is solid again. The outside trims screwed up and sealed. New insulation in and bed base in and screwed down which has stiffened it all up. I've done away with the lift out panel over the cab as we always left it in place anyway so made sense. Bit of a tidy up to do then new faced ply to the walls. All told it's been easier than I expected, I thought I would have to take out windows etc but it's all solid from the bottom of the windows up which probably means the windows have been leaking and caused the rot. Will reseal them next fine day we have.

I hope this rebuild may be of use to someone someday.
