So, have been searching around for vehicles, to put together a 4x4 chinook. Found the donor chinook omega on the back of a 78 for cheap and found a 1987 2wd 1 ton as the basis for the chinook build. Neither of which are in my possession at the moment.

Through looking around the internet to learn more about the 1 ton toys, came up with some interesting information, though possible hearsay.

"Have a 1986 one ton hi lux pickup. They look the same as a half ton but are built much heavier duty. the 22RE has factory enlarged valves and different cam lobes 130hp 1ton. front suspension has larger brake disk/ ball joints/ upper and lower A arms and huge torsion bar. Rear heavier leaf spring's and 8 inch rear end with reinforced axle tube's. The commercial trucks had a dually rear end rtec auto or 4 speed mt/ non-commercial trucks a standered axle configuration with 5 speed mt or rtec auto trans. btw a few one tons where just 22R at 96hp. Stock 22RE truck/celica/4runner is 116hp. I hope this clears up a bunch of misinformation."

Can anybody confirm that these engines were in fact tuned up from factory? Seems everything else mentioned checks out, but cannot find any info of engine specs.

Also read a rumour that the frame is heavier duty too...higher frame channel height supposedly.

Any truth to this?

Oh and, hello :-)

There has been precious little discussion on the 1-Ton SRW Hilux on the Toyota MH Forum & Yahoo Groups. I'm not sure if anyone is going to be able to offer much info.

A few years back there was a 1985 1-Ton SRW on EBay and I took note of it's VIN (JT4RN55E4F0117843). If you felt so inclined, you could cross check for differences in Part Numbers between it and a standard 1/2-Ton to look for differences. I've meant to do so myself, but never quite found the motivation. :)

I've seen no mention of any engine used other that "116hp".

No mention of the 22R-ET.

EDIT:

You can look up parts by VIN here:- http://www.toyotapartszone.com/toyota-truck-pickup-parts.html

Where did you find that (possibly correct) info about the upgrades? Got a link?

Last page

Thats strange, thought the true 1 tons didn't come out tell 86, and yet that vin is for an 85 1ton.

Thanks for that website, once this guy gets home and gets a vin for me, will do some cross references.

Cheers

Edit: starting to think the engine upgrades mentioned is bs, even toyota brochure put 116hp. Would think if they tuned the engine they would mention it.

Hold on, there may be some truth to the bigger valves...

http://www.toyotapartszone.com/Page_Product/PartDetail.aspx?model=TRUCK,PICKUP&year=1987&catalogCode=671440&VAID=2194&selectConditions=(11=CND;1=22REC;3=T1;4=STD;5=MTM;9=10T)&originCountry=(11=CND)&sectionID=1&componentsID=11-04

If you look down the page at intake and exhaust valves, you see that in the manufacture notes they had oversize O/S and standard STD versions of these valves, which where BOTH replaced by a different part number (part number says discontinued). Seems to me that there may have been "options" to get oversized valves at very least.

Camshaft on the other hand is the same for 1ton and sr5 and deluxe models, it would seem.

Also with that link, could not search for a 1ton version of anything until 1987.

Here's some photos of a 1987 I stripped. 1 ton dually. Frame did not appear to be any heavier then any other Toyota I've worked on. I torched the frame in half and it certainly wasn't very thick.

Some closer photos of the 86 frame. Springs are not original. Many leafs were added to the stacks.

Thanks you all!

If there is no real big difference then I won't worry about finding a 1ton, specially now that I have found out about the full float conversions available!

Hope to start a new thread soon building my new 4 wheel drive home :-) Have been living in a tipi for a few months now, and find it is just not mobile enough. So decided to sacrifice a little space and comfort for something smaller, but far more convenient...enter toyota motorhome, haha. Who even wants to pay rent and mortgage anyways?! Haha

Cheers

^nice build

Thanks for helping clear some stuff up!

Found an 88 1ton with rusty box and clean everything else for 500, and a 78 toyota that will be donating its chinook omega camper, also picking up for 500.

Will focus on getting the chinook on the back of the 88 and making it livable, as this will be a winter home, while my tipi will be a summer home.

Than start collecting parts for a full float rear end and 4x4 :-D

Pretty excited to be getting back into the toyota world. My first truck 14 years ago was an 82 pickup, also, the best all around truck ever owned.

Sounds like a great deal for $500. I paid $500 for my 1987 dually 1 ton - but the aluminum box was fine and the truck was rusted to death.

Yep, thought so as well!

Haha, just realized that I can use my tipi as a hoisting point to pick the chinook camper off the donor truck. With the size of the tipi, should have enough room to lift the section three feet in the air. Perfect!

Definitely have some work to do on the chinook. Probably end up gutting the whole thing and making something more suitable to me.
