kathg1
Hello, I am new to the forum. I have a 1988 Dolphin that I am finally putting back together. I need some advice on finishing the floor and walls. For the floor, I have started ripping out the carpet (not as easy as I thought). I was going to put adhesive tile, but wondered if it is better to have carpet since 1) there are lots of staples in the plywood floor; and 2) insulation. What have you done? I have 2 dogs so I want something easy to clean. The carpet in the cab also needs changing. And I am worried about all the curving parts of the interior that currently have carpet wrapped around == did you find a creative way with fabric, vinyl, etc? Second are the walls. I have used Kilz painted over the wallpaper and also on the plywood under the wallpaper where the wallpaper was coming off. I have some water damage near some windows, and have glued and sanded in these areas. I was thinking about painting with an egg shell paint with a texture added to cover the wall imperfections. Have you done this? Any better suggestions? Thank you so much. I have received some great advice from this forum in the past.
gregor
I have a 87 sunrader, have removed the carpet. going to replace it with one piece vinyl, then a good quality indoor-outdoor carpet.I beleive having vinyl underneath might protect the wooden flooring underneath in case of a water leak, and and outdoor carpet easy to clean in case of pet dog accident. i would recomend spending a little extra now rather then having to replace or repair wooden flooring later. The cab carpet apears to be in good shape.needs a good cleaning.dont know what is underneath the carpet in cab area.good luck on your project. it wont be that hard to do. WME
Vinyl flooring works great. Use outdoor caulk around all the edges to prevent leaks. Get cheap Wal Mart carpet runners to keep feet warm. In the event of a major booboo throw them away and get new ones.
bufbooth
I put a wood floor down right over the top of the carpet, it was designed to go over carpet. Dennis...
kathg1
Thanks for the quick responses! It sounds like some type of hard flooring is preferable with perhaps the carpet over the top. How did you deal with the carpet wrapping on the wall between the cab and camper? It looks to me like this was factory installed and stripped down to the plywood it seems like it would be difficult to do vinyl or other on the curving surfaces. Many thanks for any suggestions. bufbooth
Hello Kathg1, I left the carpet on the walls in place. At this URL there is a few pictures of the floor. http://toyotamotorhome.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=3683
kathg1
Ya Baby, thanks. Wow that wood floor looks fantastic! I wish I hadn't torn out half of my carpet already. I found some indoor/outdoor carpet that I figure I can put over the curved carpet inside without too much trouble. thanks for that suggestion. I also like your curtains and the backsplash by the stove. Very nicely done. Did you also reupholster? If so did you do it yourself? I will be replacing the foam cushions and am thinking of putting a thin foam layer over the couch and reupholster over it. Always something!!! Totem
i ripped out the carpet and used vise grip pliers to pull every staple out. you want to remove weight from the rig to compensate for the weight you are adding in flooring.; so the carpet should be thoroughly removed. I went over the 70's wall paneling with tongue n groove cedar for a fresh smell and warm wooden look but wish i had taken the time to remove the original wall paneling now in retrospect to save weight. kathg1
Monterey, thanks for the advice. The carpet is very difficult to get out but I will persevere. The cedar interior sounds great == I don't have the skill to do that so will probably stick with paint. Thanks again.
Totem
kathg1: tongue and groove cedar is cheap and an electric brad nailer is fun and also cheap, no skill really other than cutting some pieces and my chopsaw and multimax made short work of it. it went up right over top of the old paneling and it smells great keeps bugs and mice out. we have had mice in everything at our house EXCEPT the rv. they seem to hate the cedar. also... Monterey Liesure is the manufacturer of my toyota Sunrader... if you look above that the nickname Totem is my screename. you can edit these things in your profile. welcome to toyotamotorhome.org
