If you have 12v to the back, Maybe bad grounds in the light assembly's mine have rivets in the housings using a couple of hammers and re-preening them helps, or where they ground to the frame could be a problem.

Check to see if you have power to the socket, as Tom W said could be a bad ground. Could also be a bad brake light switch or bad wire at the brake pedal. Also power to the brake light circuit is obtained somewhere between the alternator and the under hood fuse box. It then runs directly to the under dash fuse box.
