1983 huntsman newbie with questions

Hello,

I just placed a deposit on a 1983 Huntsman with 53,000 original miles 22r 4 speed. Any Toyota Rv in Oklahoma is a rare find.

Here is what is wrong so far that I have seen both the good and the bad.

1. Has some water leaks and will need some paneling replaced. Interior is good tho floors and cabinets are solid. Carpet needs to go too ugly.

2. Has New A/c roof mounted works perfect

3. Cab A/C works but will need to be converted and charged.

4. generator makes a ticking noise wont start owner said it worked in the past.

5. Engine runs and purrs great has had new cltuch put in.

6. Dont know status of water system for leaks but water pump does work I assume will need to go thru and make sure it has no leaks.

7. Just Found out about the axle thing after the fact. I dont know what type axles are on the rv? If it is a 5 lug should I run?

8. Dont know if fridge works or stove top yet?

I have wanted a toyota Rv for years. I paid $1,800 for it which I think is a fair price? I gave the elderly couple a $1,000 down and will pick-up the Rv when I pay for it in full mid aug. I know when I saw the ad on-line that I would be lucky to be able to buy it if it was still available. Today when I went to look at it the owners son said he had about a dozen emails in response to it. While I was looking at it his cell rang while we where outside and another person was wanting to look at it he told them it was sold to me.

I have no problem working on older campers have done a few in the past. What worrys me is the axle thing like everybody what is the typical cost to swap these out? What models should I look for a straight swap with no mods needing to be done?

Lasty Should I get my deposit back and run on this deal?

Thanks

Matt

Hello Matt: Sounds as though you are suffering from a mild case of "Buyers Remorse"

As to the axel issue, find out if it is a 6 lug with the outer bearing by looking at the ToyHome, take a mechanic with you. Or if too far away, then telephone or Email the sellers with your question. There are many existing threads here dealing with this axel issue. See the following links for starters:

As to your $1000 deposit, which was given in earnest money, did you make some kind of written, signed document that if you choose to cancel this deal under certain conditions that you would receive a partial or full refund? After all they are telling all new callers that the ToyHome is sold to you.

I dont have buyers remorse yet? As Stated I have no problem working on the little Toy I am just curious what the cost's involved with the axel swap would be and where would be a good source of finding one in Oklahoma?

As stated these little toy's are rare around Oklahoma. I will drive by the rv today after work and look at the axel. I am sure the people and the son are not aware of the axel thing?

The son does not know anything about the rv whatsoever but they are really nice people and I am sure they would understand if I did back out of the deal as fast as it sold and the voulme of calls and emails they had I sure it would sell just as quick again.

Thanks Matt

How exciting!!! Another Okie!!!

Hi Matt!!

I bought Sadie before I knew anything about anything. Paid $1200 initially, and been through it all: re-carpet, re-upholstry, new one ton rearend, flush the gas tank, rebuild the carb, new fuel lines, tweak this, tweak that, and add another $3000. I'd do it again in a heartbeat!!!!

I'm proud to have given the little motorhome a 2nd chance; a new life. She's repaid me a hundred fold.

You say the engine runs great! Awesome!!

You've got this forum to help with questions on everything, even the axle swap (if you've find your's has the dreaded 5 lug). All the cons you mention are fixable. We build a special bond with these toys. Trust me. You'll learn as you go, like we all do. I say: Don't give up on the deal. At least you're going in with your eyes open.

Best wishes,

shanda (steppin' down off her soap box).

Plan for the axle swap to cost around $2000 to $2500. That's the salvaged 1 ton, dually, rearend (plus brake lines and sway bar), shipping and installation. If you can find one here in OK, that would be so cool!!! Remember, you're not looking for a 1 ton Toyota "motohome" rearend assembly, you're looking for a 1 ton toyota chassis made during the years ______ to ______? (Toy gurus, you'll have to help...my memory is worthless.) They were usually made into box trucks or moving vans.

I found Sadie's rearend in Phoenix, at toyotasalvage.com. They were really great to work with. Per my request, they emailed pictures (on the chassis) so I could make sure it was the 6 lug, one ton. When I told them I was really serious and had contacted UPS LTL regarding shipping (had UPS fax me a bid and a request for pick up in Phoenix) and my axle mechanic regarding receiving (drop off location), I asked them to email me pics of it on the pallet. They did. I overnighted the UPS shipping request and a cashier's check. They next day, they called UPS for pick up, and in about a week it was sitting at the mechanic's shop.

I had tried to find one locally, and called many salvages around central OK, but was always dissapointed. Of course, I might not have been asking the right questions, or they just didn't want to mess with a girl. You may have better luck. Anyhoo, above all, this forum has been invaluable, and the help received....priceless!

Hope this helps.

shanda

Well,

I found a set-up in Dallas cost $250 axel and rims off a 1992-1993 1ton toyota cargo truck. No springs or swaybar any ideas where to get this stuff? I quess that is a good price but what type of modifications will need to be done going to a newer set-up?

Thanks matt

I'll be honest. I've been driving Sadie without a sway bar. (I didn't know about the mounting differences with those until after I'd shipped in the axle and the mechanic asked me about it. We left it off (didn't wanna spring for another UPS bill), she's doing just fine without it. Much sturdier with the one ton rearend, than the light duty with the sway bar.

So, you're sure the one you're looking at has the 5 lug light duty rearend???

$250 is a steal, and Dallas is a nice little road trip from anywhere in Okla. Not sure about mounting differences from the newer models. Maybe Greg or Turtle can help there. I know there are past posts.

Wishing you the best.

  • 11 years later...

Share a picture of your rig. Big question for me is if you have duel rear wheels do they have 5 lugs or 6?
