Kat
Hi all, I found a Shorty about a days drive from me at a reseller that is closed today so I can't get anymore info yet but I thought I'd share the pics and ask for your input. It's hard to tell from the pics but someone pointed out it has the 5 lug rear axle so I plan to try to negotiate the cost if possible, because it will need the axle swap. Other than that, are there any red flags jumping out at you that I should be aware of or does anybody know this Shorty? I have a list of questions to ask and want to request more pics and a video walk through that includes the engine running if possible. They are asking 6K and the only description so far is " 1983 Toyota Motorhome for sale. Gas. Clean title. Tires good. Has bathroom with shower. Sleep area over cab. Gas stove. Sink. U- shaped sofa". Shortys are not easy to come across in my area so I'm looking hard at this one but if it doesn't work out, I will travel for one in great original shape and pay more for it, within reason. Odyssey 4x4
It looks decently clean. It definitely needs a full build in my opinion! I'd be afraid to even drive it home on that axle but I'm overly cautious. Mind if I ask the asking price? I see the exterior of the window trim looking very gummed up. I'm sure someone probably attempted a leak fix. See if you can get some photos sent of the frame under the truck before making the long drive and finding a rust pit when you get there. I'd say the bottom is probably clean since the cab doesn't show any signs of rust where it normally shows.
Derek up North
No question, those are 'foolies' installed. 18' Sunraders were included in the recall, if anyone tries to tell you they weren't.And if anyone tries to tell you that they've lasted this long, here a a couple of pictures (both Sunraders) to show them:-

I noticed that gummy stuff around the windows too, which makes me cringe. I'll hate to but should probably walk away if has a lot of evidence of leaks/rotting. I don't want a full build project. I'll ask about an under cab pic. Thanks for the tips!

Thanks for sharing the pics. I found the recall info and the axle info to share with them but I bet they will play dumb and I'm a terrible negotiator. Odyssey 4x4
Does anyone know if Toyota is still doing the recall? Just curious. If not, know that the cost of having a shop do it will be in the thousands.
WME
The recall was NOT against Toyota, but against the RV manufactures.
Derek up North
Toyota never did the Recall. The Recall was against the motorhome manufacturers who added the 'foolies' which are what caused the axle failure problem. https://www.upi.com/Archives/1990/04/18/Government-determines-safety-defect-in-mini-motorhomes/4843640411200/
