More Axle Questions?!

I just picked up a 78 Chinook poptop with 88k original miles....I know there's a TON of stuff on the rear axle here .....but I need to know if I should be thinking about changing mine? I have the 5lug "non-floating" axle and single rear tire set-up. I've heard a few conflicting things and I'd like to hear from anyone with experience...since it's under 18' should I not worry?....or is this something that I should do right away? If so....where can I find one? THANKS GANG!!

Hello, the first thing you probably should do is go get her weighed at a scale that

can measure the weight of each axle. I think the 5 lug axles were rated at 3/4 ton.

If you are under 3/4 ton normally loaded, you should be okay.

The issue with the 5 lug axles was that they were configured to be a dulley in which

it was not designed to be causing extra stress on the wheel bearings, and then got

overloaded....strike two..
