SanDiegoPaul
My '86 has rubber stems in the rears. I've had 8ply, with 10 ply rating tires installed but they did not have metal valve stems for these rears. So I have had them leave in the rubber ones but I know that's not good. Passenger car, rubber valve stems cannot be inflated to the 65PSI that these tires are rated for. At length, they did find me some metal ones they think will fit. But they are just metal stubbies like in the front wheels. There is no way to check the air pressure in the rear inside wheels with these. I want proper duallie style metal stems where there is a tube coming from the inside wheel that allows you to check the air in them. I've seen these in the past, the tube looks like a big brass, 8" long valve stem. Suggestions appreciated. Paul in San Diego Still smoky but getting better. Here are a couple of options for the hose type. http://www.jcwhitney.com/webapp/wcs/stores...catalogId=10101 http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/sto...970_42532_42532 Both are flexible rubber tubes not solid metal extenders. Here are some solid metal extension options http://www.rvupgradestore.com/index.asp?Pa...mp;Category=430 I have both the flexible rubber (on my Sunrader) and solid metal (on my diesel).. both types seem to work just fine

They leak. Braided valve stem extensions are the #1 reason for premature tire replacement on a motor home. What I'm looking for is truck style valve stems for duallies. They are brass, and the inner ones are long enough for you to get to the stem for checking the air.
bufbooth
I have the short valve stems and I can check my dually tires air pressure with a truck drivers air guage. They cost about $5 at Walmart and are about a foot long with a double head. Dennis...
SanDiegoPaul
Thanks Dennis. Your stems are metal stubbies, like an inch or so long? I'm surprised you can get in there with a gauge at all. I know what a truck tire gauge is, but didn't think it would work. Thanks for the tip. bufbooth
I did not think the truck drivers air gauge would work either until my friend proved it to me.
Totem
Just catching up on this older thread... recently I decided to put on wheel simulators which further restrict access to my stock rubber valve stems. I put in 4 inch stainless extensions (i know i know ... bad idea, steel on rubber and also extensions more places to leak etc.) at home my truck gauge has no gauge for measuring pressure. So i decided to go with the extender so that i could get a digital readout using my standard digital air meter. this is where my problems began. On the next trip out in the rig i noticed the following problems: 1.)a LOT of vibration over 60 MPH. Is this from the wheel simulators that claim to be factory balanced? my guess is no, its from the stainless 4 inch extenders. 2.) air; the extenders function, but barely; i have to push really hard on the digital meter to get it push the extender to catch the original valve stems valve. one out of three attempts is best i get; this is also true of adding air. So I have decided to pull these things off (extenders). My real concern is the original statement on rubber stems not handling 65 lbs... Mine has been riding on 65 lbs with rubber stems now for over 500 miles. Did i damage the tires? The part of this that makes me the most sad is that the big six rims I sourced originally all had custom chromed brass 4 inch one piece valve stems that the tire shop "replaced" with rubber ones. why did they do that? I may never know. Anyhow now I have vibration, cant fill wheels and am wondering what to do on this situation. should all 4 have long stems? what about rotation? I am due for that also... Please advise.
90micromini
I just dont understand the 65lbs max with rubber valve stems. I think thats bull. I have a work van and trailer with tires that require 80lbs of air pressure. all the wheeels have rubber valve stems. Worked fine for over ten years now. Drove van and work trailer from LA to portland up mountains and down mountains. So 65lbs max on rubber valves Bull........................................ Vanman
We replaced all of ours, from the Toyota dealer # 90942-05026,I think. And I had to enlarge the rear simulators cut-outs, quite a bit on the T shaped cut-out for the outer wheel, just a mild 1/2 hole shape on the other 2. I used a dremel with the older (thin) type cut-off-wheel. I had a hard time finding air chucks that would work, have quite a collection now. If I get the time I plan to relieve them more so check your work more carefully than I did!!! vanman
