Hi, I think I need shock replacement advice for an 85 17 Sunrader on a 1984 Toyota 22r, magnificent fiberglass house, carb motor, 6 lug dual rears, 140k miles, new and expensive and correct load range tires finally. I'm in sunny Guaymas, Sonora, Mex right now where they REALLY know how to grow potholes. Every 20 feet the truck feels like its been hit by a torpedo. It just slams and shudders and all the dishes jump around. The back seems to hit harder than the front. Its hard on my already shattered nerves. On a smooth road the truck handles reasonably well, no swaying and not much oscillation. Any ideas? The only parts store I recognize here is AutoZone. I can wait and do the internet order at home I guess. I'm usually a do-it-yourselfer but I think the air bag idea is too expensive for me.

Thanks as always, pm.

For something like suspension (springs & shocks), I've found that Mexican mechanicos are usually great. Find a shock shop and have them take a look underneath. Some places can even rebuild shocks for you (seen it done but no idea what they're like).

You probably already do this but I watch ahead at other vehicles to see where they bob & switch to avoid the REALLY big holes, this is very important at night or if it is raining and you need to rely on locals knowledge of whats under the water (but probably no rain in Sonora).

As always watch for the 'reverse' pothole or tope(s) and vibradores etc. as they can do much damage hit at speed.

buena suerte !

Most likely your springs are sagging and the axle is contacting the rubber bumper on the frame (bottoming out). Check the clearance and determine if you need to increase it.

If air bags are too expensive google zuk mod. This involves putting a coil spring between the axle and the frame. I bought a set of coil helper springs from Amazon and mounted them over my dead air bags. Cost $25.
