Steering

I have not looked into the steering on my 1990 Toyota, but I used to own a 1986 Toyota half ton

pickup truck and it had a steering box located in the engine compartment that had an adjustment

bolt on it that would allow the steering to be a little tighter or looser.

The is a lot of reasons why steering can be a bit loose, one is that the gears in the steering

gear box are worn out, another is the front end needs some work (alignment, ball joints, ect).

Also on my 1986 pickup, there was two (or two on each side) stablizer bars that connected to

the front wheel via a bolt that was about a 1/4 wide and 4 inches long, surround by rubber

washers. In the 15 years that I owned the truck, I had to replace these bolts twice due to

them rusting out. They were easy to replace, basically getting the new bolts/washers from

a Totota dealer and then dropping them in place. I do not recall having any steering problems

at the time, I realized the missing bolt while changing the oil, and my truck rarely carried a

load, so the missing bolt under a load might translater to loose steering. Just a thought.

Does it have a steering stabilizer?

If it does check to see if it is leaking and stopped functioning.

If it does not have one, adding one will tighten up the steering A LOT...
