Are you running it on gasoline or propane? If on propane - the electric-fuel-primer engages whenever the starter is cranking. So if it runs with the starter button in - but does not want to when you let off of it - you've got a lean fuel problem.

If you are running on gasoline - I have no ideas. Starter button should not make a difference on a newer engine with breakerless magneto ignition. Older ones with battery ignition - yes.

That's a altitude compensator it really does not have much adjustment unless you break the plastic stop. The start side of the switch powers the fuel pump until the engine has oil pressure as read by the oil pressure sender on the engine they have been know to cause your issue..

I have an owner's manual dated June 1990 for Onan KV genset. The page on troubleshooting does not list this particular problem, sorry. The closest listed was "unit runs then stops" and gives as possible causes 1) out of fuel 2) oil level too low, and 3) oil level too high.

When you get this solved please post what caused it.

Yes low oil or pressure will do the same thing. It is a low pressure oil switch that controls the ign and the fuel pump. when the start is pressed it by pass the oil switch so while it is cranking all of this stays on until the start switch is released. if there is no oil pressure at that point it will not continue to run. If the oil pressure switch is defective and registers no pressure it will stop the engine.

Talked to Onan. Its a newish generator with a few safety features. Holding the start button down bypasses these features, thus allowing the unit to stay running. The camper is from California originally, so maybe the altitude adjustment was far off and causing the safety shut off to kill it

Sure other thing can cause a run problem but like you said it ran fine 3 weeks ago so why would the mix change? If you look carefully there is an altitude scale on the adjustment it is possible it was adjusted for high altitude. The only real safety thing on that engine is low oil pressure.
