TikiShack
Current listing on CL. What is it?
fred heath
It's called a "tag axle". Some of the early Toyota motorhomes had them.
Derek up North
Seen (occasionally) from 1979 - 1981.
TikiShack
So it has two single axles in series? Looks like it would wear tires out quickly.
fred heath
Not series. The tag axle is a "dead axle" placed directly behind a live axle. It allows extra weight carrying capacity. Some are air operated. Not sure what system was used in the older toys.
Derek up North
I've never really seen too much good info on the 'tag axle' Toyota and how they're set up. It seems that some had single wheel on all axles while others had 'foolies' on the middle one. I'm also not sure how well the tag axle would share the load. From the few pictures I've managed to find of the rear suspension designs, it looks pretty sketchy! Anyway, I don't think it was a very great solution since nobody seems to have made any later than 1981. IF it was a great solution, everyone would have made (and wanted) one.
