Been a lurker here for a while and decided to join in since I'm starting updating the suspension of my 83 18' Sunrader. My question is regarding rear spring removal, I did search on this topic to make sure that the black tank has to be remove in order to take the front bolts hanger out on the driver side and all I see is mentioning dropping the black tank by removing the strap but not mentioning if I need to get the shower flange inside the camper. Is there a step by step, or pictures for owner of 18' Sunrader who tackle this issue? For those who did this, how do you put a new strap back w/o removing the entire shower pan inside? Thanks

I know you have gotten an answer here or on my site minitruckcampers. Hope you can get an answer on the toyota-campers site. Ask specifically for Don Owen. He's restoring a 1984 Sunrader shorty and maybe he removed the black tank. I have 2 of them but never have replaced springs and never have had to remove the black tank. I would start with the strap and then the toilet. Maybe the shower drain too. Just don't know. I have been lucky so far.

I put the installation on hold as I'm missing some harware to finish it. Hopefully I can get back to it soon maybe after thanksgiving. Thanks.

I emailed Don and asked him if he had removed his tank for any reason. If he answers me I will get back here for sure and tell you what he said. You might try the guy with the post here 1990 Sunrader remodel. Sounds like he removed everything inside and he mentions removing the shower completely.

Why do you wish to remove the entire spring assembly? I've beefed up many. Left the top leaf alone (the one attached to the perches). Just cut the centerbolt, took out the leaves and added new or more as needed.

Wish I could do that but the spring is already or was in negative arched for a while and one leaf is cracked in half. The spring that I got is from a 4x4 donor plus I'll beefed it up with spring helper and add a leaf (81 thru 87 will fit but make sure you measure eye to eye and pin to eye on both ends). Just waiting for my shocks, spring perched for tundra axle, sway bar end link and cooperation from the weather and I'll get back to it.

Can't speak for your situation but . . . I've beefed up many trucks with a main leaf like you say your's is. Just added good HD leafs with the proper arch and all was fine. The OEM Toyota leaf is only 1/4" and not very substantail. I usually add 3/8" thick leafs to Toyotas. The perch bolt by the gas tank pulls out from the outside so removal of the tank is not necessary.

I'm trying to include photos but if it doesn't work I also included links to the same photos.

He's not trying to remove his gas tank. The little Sunraders have the bathroom behind the drivers seat and the black tank is in the way of his removing the spring. Those black tanks if broken need to be custom molded, very expensive, so it's in his best interest to remove it before working on the spring. He needs to know how to get the black tank out without damaging anything.

You have a challenge in store if you have to take the black water holding tank out. I am not sure you can, the curve in the side of the outside fiberglass curves under the holding tank & very limited space between side & frame they are installed before the rv is put on the frame. The pipe from the shower has nut (ABS) connected to trap easy to get to WD40 might help get to turn. Take toilet out see if the toilet flange is glued to the 3" ABS pipe into tank. You may have to cut off flange. The 3" is probably glued into tank. The tank (ronco #59) was still available last summer. I took rv off '77 truck put on'86. Found out the newer truck frame was wider than older one. Had to take tank off to get it onto frame. After it was on frame could not get old tank on because of frame space. The newer tank at ronco is 2" narrower but I was not sure I could get it in so did not order. Used different style tank. Could you cut spring bolt off each end then put bolt in from outside, nut on from inside. Good luck
