MyLilToy
I am looking to buy a "truck" type GPS , which will allow me to punch in the weight and height of the vehicle. I realize these are a bit more ecxpensive than regular car type GPS units , but I like the idea if I program it for a "truck" and punch in the weight and height it won't take me down any parkways where the camper wouldn't be allowed , or places with low bridge clearances or bridges with light load limits. My Winnie weighs almost 7000 Lbs. ! I would also like a "talking" unit that I can both say the address I am looking for (without having to punch it in) and will give me talking turn by turn directions. What is a good unit for the money , that will be able to do what I want ? Edited June 15, 2010 by MyLilToy
futar
You may also want to find one with an external antenna port. I installed (glued) a GPS antenna to the aluminum roof of my Winny and I get a much better signal all the time.
Maineah
I run the DeLorme mapping program with a USB puck and a laptop. I open the front vent/escape hatch and toss the puck on top of the screen then close the vent. DeLorme has an on line option that lets you check for problems on your chosen route. I would not think you would be much higher then an SUV with a bike on the top mine's under 11'. If you are sold on a "truck" GPS I would think a truck stop would be a good place to check them out.
