  1. where in the triangle?

    I live in Raleigh.

  2. Think anyone here would be interested in that generator, either to fix by replacing the brushes, or for parts? Otherwise I'll just take it to the scrap yard in the coming week.
  3. i have this pic of the old one (you actually gave me some good information before, when I was thinking of doing the job myself): I have a 1987 Toyota Sunrader, but there wasn't an ignition wire there before.
  4. A couple of weeks ago, I had an RV repair shop replace my battery isolator, because the current isolator wasn't separating the batteries, and I was told I needed a new one. They replaced it with a Sure Power 70amp isolator. They also installed a battery switch to turn the house battery off as an added measure. However, when they called to tell me the job was done, they told me that my alternator was also bad. They asked if I wanted a mechanic down the road (who they'd called to determine this) to replace it. I told them I would have my mechanic do so. My mechanic put in a new alternator. When I picked the RV up, he told me that the RV place had hooked up the isolator incorrectly and it might be the reason the alternator blew. From what I could determine of what he'd done, he had wires running from the alternator to both the isolator and the starting battery, with the only used posts on the isolator being the alternator running in and the house battery wire running out. I was pretty sure this wasn't correct, but not confident enough to argue with him. Once I got home and tested things out with the system my mechanic rigged, everything that runs off 12v power still operates when the house battery is switched off, so the current setup isn't separating the batteries. That can't be right! (I know the battery switch on the house battery works, because when I disconnect the wire from the alternator to the isolator, the 12v lights/etc. operate when the house switch is on and do not operate when the house switch is off.) I have a general idea of how things should go - from the alternator to the A post on the isolator, and then from posts 1 and 2 to the starting and house batteries, respectively. But once you start following the wire toward the starting battery, I get lost and just don't think I can do this myself. I need help, and I just don't know who to trust. Any recommendations for solid RV repair folk, or even a local Toyhome owner, who can re-run the wires in the chassis area and then test to make sure everything both charges and is still separate? I'm really at my wits end.
  5. I have a 1987 Toyota Sunrader. It's currently hanging out in Carrboro, NC, but my girlfriend and I are planning a trip cross-country with it beginning this March.
  6. I bought this Champion 3100 inverter generator over the holidays when Overstock had it on sale and was offering 15% off all orders. Ended up being $680. I haven't used it yet, but it had good reviews, so I'm hopeful. I had looked at 2000ish watt portable inverter units, because they're lighter and would fit in the designated generator space, but was concerned about whether they'd start my AC appropriately, and I also like that the Champion has a straight 30 amp plug, so no adapters to worry about. And of course, the Champion 3100 was much cheaper than the Honda 2000i. I think the old Onan AJ just needs some new brushes inside, but figured I could get this new portable generator for close to what someone would charge me to fix the AJ, and be able to use it for non-RVing purposes too. Now I'm wondering if removing the old Onan AJ is within my wheelhouse; I'd like to take the it out to create some more storage for us on the trip, and also recoup a few bucks if possible by selling it on Craigslist. . How hard will that be?
  7. finally getting these tires tomorrow - got the nexens. i tried to get the hankooks from walmart thinking that i could get them rotated during our trip for free, but could not find a walmart near me willing to mount them. they gave me different reasons everywhere - too heavy for their lift, they won't do duallies, they can't service a vehicle with a propane tank, etc.
  8. awesome - thanks, y'all! we're quitting our jobs at the end of february and taking the sunrader cross country and back over the next year, so i want to make sure i get a good set on there.
  9. how did you find the tires on the site? a link would be much appreciated! i have trouble searching by size with these types of tires. i called a couple places looking for tires for my sunrader this morning, and the nexen sv820 185r14 was the tire recommended by both places - they actually acted like that's all they could get. so it's nice to see someone else thinks favorably of them.
  10. mine is a 1987 toyota sunrader i actually did see a little box like that next to the starting battery on the opposite side under the hood. as for the one you can see - there's a wire floating around that's disconnected from the other side of that circuit breaker...i don't know if i should reconnect it or not, or why it's undone to begin with.
  11. Awesome! Now the question is...with what do I replace it? I'm going to pick up a multimeter and test it just to make sure it's bad, but I feel pretty confident that it is. should i pick up something like this or replace it with a something like this? i'm all ears as far as type and brand recommendations! i only have one house battery, a 12v, in addition to my starting battery. thanks so much.
  12. there's no "can" type thing - that's what i've been looking for, but i did find this on the drivers side right up against the wall. it's made by leisure components and it has posts for main battery, alternator, and auxiliary battery, which leads me to believe it should be it...right? i can't be further off than i was with the windshield wiper motor!
