  1. Drivetrain overloading killed the Toyota MH. They were built on pickup frames and weighed close to three tons. The single tire per side rear axle couldn't handle the load, and broke, with sometimes serious results. The Toyota factory supplied duallie axles to replace the singles, but it was expensive. No one wanted to leave themselves open to a lawsuit because of overloading the drivetrain from the MH factory. Toyota refused to supply chassis to any motorhome manufacturer after that. You can by smaller MH today, but the last one I read about cost almost 80 grand. You can by a LOT of gas for a stronger MH for the difference.
  2. I wish I could give you a good reason to explain the the mind set of the people who are being abused by these , ahhh, units ( yah ! That'll work), but I cannot ! Maybe it is the challenge of resurecting something that causes other people to giggle. Maybe it's a masochistic tendency that lies ( lays ?) dormant in some poor souls. I have read an article about a fella that came into a hospital after being hit by a train. When asked how the accident happened, he stated that he wanted to see how close he could stand to a moving train before he got hit. He found out ! This may explain our particular psychosis. Or, it may be the desire to be off the wall a little, or a lot ! This is in comparison to the BIG BOYS with the Greyhound bus size Mhs that citizen the RV parks. They always smile at mine. Sort of like a person with a mastiff dog seeing someone with a Yorkie. It is good to tell these Folks the gas mileage. They get a faraway look in their eye, then the self serving smile kinda leaves, and they say ," Wow!" They clean their front windows with a ladder, they sweep their green carpet with a vacuum, and take the MH to a sevice center. We do a lot of our own work and know what goes on underneath. Ours are cheaper. We rock !
  3. Turbos' running great.Or it was last year last time I used it. Think I told here year or so ago, how I cooked the header manifold. The boys at LC Engineering said I must have been running 1600 degrees F. exhaust temp to do that ! To make a long story short, I had erred in using a knock sensor. It was backing out timing and overheating exhaust because it was reading some piston slap due to the Hyper eutectic pistons I was using. Disconnected the knock sensor, took it to a fella here that runs a dragster and had him listen to the engine while I stood on the go pedal on a road test. Said there was no spark knock, just something that "Was there". Not really something to be conserned about. So, I ran it down to Tenn. and watched the exhaust temp with my new Temp guage. 1450 at the top reading. Going up a long hill at 50 -55 mph. It got about 13.5 mpg average. Thing can now get out of it's own way. Still running the stock comp. ratio. with 4 - 5 pounds boost. I know that's low boost with a high comp. ratio, but I use premium gas. I figger with my needs, that gets the job done with very little chance of rolling the crank out on the road. Runs about 185 to 210 on the cooling system. I am very well pleased. Oh, by the way, the guy who most helped me iron out the wrinkles was John in Customer Support at LC Engineering. Can't say enough good things about that organization.
  4. http://www.toyotacatalog.net/m1webgear/Pro...aspx?Class=1641 That's the outfit where I got my turbo kit. They know what they are about. Great customer support. A little pricey, but hoo boy, do they deliver!
  5. Happy Birthday, Greg. Thanks for the hard work, the site, and giving this ol' man a forum to network with other strange people that push 20 year old overloaded vehicles down the road. If I were 20 years younger, I would bow with a hat doffing florish. Will you settle for a glass lifted across the miles in respect ? Thought you would..
  6. Now that's a very good job. I give it three"Woots" and 30 seconds of applause. Ahhh.. by the way Greg.. wonder what that sucker would do with a turbo on the V6... Muuuuhahahahah.. Come-on, ya know ya want to.
  7. Ahhhh, Gypsy ? This wouldn't be the kind of grass you can sell, is it?
  8. Just a thought, but if you have a hydraulic clutch, have the flywheel finisher tell you how much metal he took off, so you can install the same thickness shim between the flywheel and crankshaft. This can make a difference. John
  9. I go with the Clutchmaster if it was me. You're be hauling around close to three ton of motorhome. That classifies it heavy duty to me. I second what WME said.
  10. I use a silver tarp.Ran me about 40 bucks, if I remember right. Lasted two years worth of Michigan winters. Still going strong. John
  11. Sorry Sir.. Bad attempt at a joke. Back when I was a kid, there were pictures of rivers, streams , waterfalls that the water illustrated appeared to move . It was done by some sort of an electrical device in behind the picture. That particular picture on the wall of your rig reminded me of those. I was fascinated by the process back then. Sorry again at the attempt of humor.
  12. That is a two-fer in my opinion! Great price and great condition ! Just one question though. That waterfall picture ain't one of those things that you turn on a switch and it appears the water is moving, is it ?
  13. I've just had recent back surgery so I'm out. Just the thought of crawling underneath right now hurts! Wish I could help.
  14. I don't know if the engine block has freeze plugs in the bell housing area on a 22R/RE. They should be inspected also. Be a real bummer if ya get it all done and these silly things start leaking. John
  15. Howdy Giant.. Check down lower on this page. There are several threads dealing with this. Hope this helps, John
  16. A lot of the 90 models had V-6 in them. Automatic trans with power steering? Sure ! My 86 Sunrader has a 4 cyl. with power steering and auto trans. Their out there. John
  17. Generally speaking, these MH are close to overloaded as they stand. Every motor home is different, but I would say that your solar panels and extra batteries should not be too much of a problem. My rig with a dually goes 5800 pounds . Add a couple adults and supplies and your up in the 65 to 6800 pound range. I try and keep the weight to a minimum. Why push it. Gets expensive.
  18. Thanks Maineah. Good site, I bookmarked it.

  20. All I ever used was what was called, "Combustion Chamber Cleaner". Spray it down the carb with the engine running and the throttle wide open. You controlled the speed of the engine by how much of the goop you dumped down the carb. The exhaust would smoke terribly. Smell bad , too. We did this part of the process out in the country to avoid getting yelled at. As you got close to the bottom of the can, you dumped the last bit in one gulp to stall the engine. Then you let it sit for a 1/2 hour as I remember. Then you pushed the throttle to the floor and started the engine. As the engine caught ,you kept revving it to keep it going. Smoked terribly again, but the engine ran smoother and smoother until it would run on its' own. Then you let it idle for 10 minutes and Voila, smooth engine. John.. lookin' through the smoke.
  21. Howdy Mov Thanks for the info. That will come in handy when I paint the Yota. John
  22. Robert... Clap clap clap.. Woot woot woot.. way ta go. John
