dwh4784 Posted May 8, 2011 Share Posted May 8, 2011 Hey there! I just picked up this motor home for the lovely price of FREE and am starting to tackle some of the obvious problems. It has sat neglected for a very long time. I'm not familiar with Toyota engines but have done quite a bit of wrenching on other cars/motorcycles over the years. Anyway, enough about me... The engine starts up easy enough but has a very low, choppy idle while puffing black smoke. It's obviously extremely rich. Once it warms up a bit the idle becomes very fast but the smoking goes away for the most part. When you shut it off it produces a loud backfire (reminds me of Uncle Buck!). The previous owner was no help with trying to diagnose the problem, but from my limited experience with carbs and him telling me this 20r engine has an automatic choke I'm guessing the first problem is that the choke is stuck ON fully or not operating properly. Is there any way to test that or are there any other obvious problem areas I should look at? I want to see if it will run properly as it sits before I start going through it. Maineah Posted May 8, 2011 Share Posted May 8, 2011 Yes it has an automatic choke and it also has a "choke pull off" that is vacuum operated. The choke closes all the way and the engine can not deal with all that gas so the pull off opens the choke a bit once it's running if its bad or maladjusted it will chug along like crazy. Most likely some one adjusted the idle to compensate for the rich choke problem. Thats a cool ride the price was very reasonable you did a good job of talking them down the tandem rear axles are pretty rare. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

dwh4784 Posted May 12, 2011 Author Share Posted May 12, 2011 Here's a picture I snapped underneath from the rear looking forward. The front axle is powered and uses a standard leaf spring setup. dwh4784 Posted August 24, 2011 Author Share Posted August 24, 2011 I thought I would update this post that I installed a brand new Weber 32/36 carburetor with manual choke and it runs like a dream. I knew these Toyota engines were stout! I haven't driven it much yet, but it had no problems at all getting up to 40mph on the main roads by my house. Idles perfect and sounds beefy (which is quite humorous) when the second barrel opens up at full throttle. I'm hoping it can at least cruise the highways at 55mph. I read somewhere that the engine/trans combos in these were designed so that the engine is producing maximum torque at 55mph, so hopefully that is a realistic goal.
