That's not a good thing. Those transmissions were known to brake governor rings and that in turn damaged the case. It is repairable but what you are looking at is an overhaul. You can access the governor from the back end take it off and clean it it probably won't help but worth a shot. Unfortunately you can not get to the governor rings with out dismantling the transmission so at that point an overhaul is in order.

hot or cld trans will sometmes from stop will take of in second or will start in lo normaly and then may shift to third . most of the time when you manually drop tran to 2nd it does after the misshift

you may need to cheek in too a BG trans service i work at a transmission shop . it works very well for these sort of things .at my shop it cost $129 . cleaner 1st then swaps all fluid out with 4 new gal of trans fluid .then condishioner is put in . will need to drive it a litle . well good luck with that and god bless .dodad

If it takes off in a higher gear the transmission thinks it is still moving. The governor rotates with the drive shaft and is under spring and fluid pressure and that is what controls the shift points as it turns faster. It is a little more complex then that but the governor does most of the work. If the rings brake it may not leave any metal in the pan but your description is a classic indication of broken rings or hung governor. I will say rings because it is intermittent usually when a governor is hung it’s stuck and does not come and go. I would remove the tail stock and the governor dismantle the governor and make sure the valves move flawlessly not even the slightest hint of any binding and while it is apart move the output shaft up and down and if there is a lot of play you’ll know where your problem is. If the rings are broken and your problem just started now is definitely the time to fix it before the rings damage the case the case can be repaired there is a bushing kit for just that problem but finding some one that knows how to do it maybe a issue. You did not say what year yours was there was a member that had a late model one with ETC that the mice chewed up his wiring to the trans and that caused some very strange shifting problems but if it is an older one there is no electronic control other then the O/D on and off. Good luck.
