Gulfstream Greg
You did not mention if the pilot is going out, or if the main burner, or both. Sounds like the thermocoupler is bad. The way it works is you set the knob to pilot and light the pilot. Then when you set the knob to higher temp (call for heat) the pilot gets a higher flame. The higher flame heats the thermocoupler to a higher tempeture, this signals the valve to open and supply gas to the burner. Sometimes the thermocoupler can get crud built up on it and not conduct the heat. Also sometimes taking the thermocoupler loose at the valve and retightning it will help. The thermocoupler produces a small amount of electricity, a very small amount and any decrease can cause a problem.
