Questions from a possible in the future Toyota owner

Hi.

I'm considering purchasing my first motor home. I can only afford a used motorhome. I would like to know the amount of miles that would be considered high? I wouldn't want to have problems with it from the start! I would like a small one, class C

Have you heard a lot about the drivetrain overloading problem in the Toyota's?

What would it cost to have that fixed for safety sake?

Is it hard to get parts & service on the Toyota Motor Homes now that they are no longer being made?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

Hello Lindac,

It is easy to get parts for the Toyotas, both the truck part and the coach part.

You will not have any problem finding Toyota truck parts at any Toyota dealer,

or most part stores. Also, they used standard coach parts and appliances on the

coach, so most RV service shops should be able to help you.

The issue with the overloading drivetrain had to do with the rear axle. The short

answer is only buy a Toyota with a 6 bolt/nut rear axle, the 5 bolt/nut ones had

the problem. All V6 toyotas (89 - 94) have the 6 bolt/nut rear axle, the 4 cylinder

(pre-90) models had to have their axle upgraded (most did but there still a few

5 bolt/nut ones on the road).

Regarding high miles, it all depends on how well the Toyota was taken care of, a

well maintained 100,000 Toyota could be better than a non-maintained 25,000 mile

Toyota. It is not uncommon to see folks on this site with dependable Toyotas that

are in the 100,000 to 150,000 mile range. My 1991 has 101,000 miles on it and I

would not fear taking it across the country.

Like any other used motorhome (or new for that matter), I would expect that any

Toyota that you purchase you are going to have to do some fix up. In a lot of

cases new owers are looking at a new set of tires ($600), some over due service

(fuilds, tune-up, belts, etc), and some window / roof resealing.

Hope the above helped,

Dennis...

Hi Lindac,

Welcome! Dennis gave you some excellent tips on these Toy motorhomes and you will find tons of great info on this site so spend some time reading and taking notes. It will not be a waste of time. Since you have already experienced a Toyota car that was wonderful, you will find that these Toyota trucks will be the same. If they have been cared for, they will get you where you want to go. They are noted for very long lives. Hope you find just the right used motorhome that will suit you and have tons of fun with it. Best wishes on your hunt! Let us know when you find yours!

Hi Dennis

So, if the Toyota RV I am going to look at is a pre 1990 (it is a 1994) with a 4 cylinder, chances are it has the 5 bolts and not the 6. So, is this upgradable? What kinds of problems would one experience with the 5 bolts? The one I am hoping to go see is a 1995 19ft with a 22R engine - 4 cylinder. Thanks Kathy - new to the forum
