Mikldom Posted October 2, 2008 Share Posted October 2, 2008 I am going to look at a 75 with the Chinook setup. It is a small one (13 feet), and does not have the Dually Axles.. Seeing that it is the tiny one, is the axle that big of a deal? My understanding that if it was over 18 feet and/or a dually, then the axle replacement is a must.. but seeing that this one is tiny, is it required or even heavily advised? I have seen several pictures.. the outside is not too pretty, but not a rust bucket either. needs some minor touch up on surface rust, and then I can just "roll it". The front bumper looks a little "shifted" The interior (according to the pictures), do not look too bad either, actually pretty good for the age. I am advised that the vehicle only has 68k miles on it,, starts up and runs perfect from what he says, sometimes it idles high between gear changes and he tells me it is in need of a spring or "wd-40".. sounds like a choke plate gumming up, and could just need to be pulled out and cleaned. How is the reliability of the 20R engine of this vintage? with the factory carb setup? the 4 speed manual tranny, are they reliable as well? I am a government housing inspector who travels every week to a different area and sometimes 1,000 miles a week. I am looking to save bunches on hotel rooms and just park it at truck stops or wal-mart parking lots for the night. I am a very handy guy and can and do fix just about anything thrown my way, but I will not "rebuild" an engine. I have no problem pulling and swapping an engine or transmission tho, but what I am told, the mechanicals on this one are just great. I am only worried that I would get somewhere up in NJ somewhere and break down. But, if I do all the pertinent things like hoses, breaks, full tune up, etc.. Rusker Posted October 3, 2008 Share Posted October 3, 2008 Can you attach any additional photos? Sounds like a pretty good deal. Many that I've seen are $1700+ around here. I just picked one up. I haven't driven it much since I'm cleaning and repairing things that bug me. Check in the fender wells for rust, or rust holes. Pull up some of the carpet under the driver/passenger floorboards. I had some surface rust in these areas that I had to take care of. Does everything work? My headlights don't work but it could be something simple, just haven't looked into it yet. It runs like a champ!!! shifts like a dream, engine purrs.. a little hard to start up tho, as the points need adjusting. I drove it about 10 miles or so.. highway speeds and all and I was very impressed with the running and the running gear.. check out this album with pictures...
