  1. Well I made to the hill country in Texas. Unfortunately they only did one side and didn't finish until 5:30. I will consider having the other side done on the trip but hope to make it and take care of it at home. Starting to hear an exhaust leak around the manifold also hope to let that go till we make it home. I think he was pretty thorough and certainly packed the bearings before installation. Replaced both seals iner and outer bearings with new races. I'm exhausted so I may add more tomorrow right now I'm just thankful and sleepy. I checked out the diagram and everything looks good. (I think) Thanks again everyone! I really appreciate the support.
  2. Well I've been here all day hanging at the shop with two kids well you can guess what that's like. Early today upon arival they test drove the warrior. A lot of head scratching went on after that. One thought after another finally getting the rig jacked up running and with some stethoscope work turns out back right wheel is making noise. Sure enough after pulling the wheel it's obvious the bearing is scored up pretty good. I was under the impression the rear wheels are grease packed and not lubed from the differential. Now I know that isn't correct I can see why they don't heat up like a bad front wheel bearing will. I still hate the fact the differential was hot to the touch around the pinion bearing. That really still has me worried but for now I have the parts waiting for them to get them on and down the road we will go. Thank you so much for all the info. Honestly I feel foolish for assuming it was the pinion bearing.
  3. Thank you that's great info! I managed to check the fluid this morning before leaving camp. Everything looked good and no signs of metal shavings. I'm at a shop now and hopeful they have a handle on these type of repairs. They are a complete transmission shop and seem well informed. If I need to replace parts in the rear end how do I look up parts? Was this same differential used on any of the traditional toyotas? Will I be able to find bearings seals etc...
  4. Oil level should be good. No signs of leaking and checked it before I left Florida. Unfortunately that is one size socket I did not throw in the tool bag so I won't be sure until tomorrow. Two bearings. I'm trying to see it in my head. Any pictures you know on the web? Any chance its just the one in front? Can one be changed or does it need to all come apart to make that happen? Ok rereading I'm lost at the preload. This certainly isn't my at my level of expertise. No drive train specialists in this area plenty of transmission shops. I'm not sure who to call.
  5. I'm on our first big trip with the family in our 89 warrior. (florida to the great nw)Started hearing a howl last night. Today leaving New Orleans it has become unbearable. I have checked the wheels and even jacked up the front and do not think its the wheel bearings. Checked u joints and made my way to the rear end. Carrier bearing seems sound but when I got to the front of the differential it is hot leading me to think its the bearing. No grinding or clunking noises so I'm really hoping its just the bearing. My questions are. Do you think I'm correct in my diagnosis? WilI we be able to get this bearing? What type of shop should I take it to for the work to be done? I tried searching the archives as to not ask the same questions over and over but may not be wording my search right. Anyway I'm overnighting here and hope to figure something out in the morning. Thanks for any help.
  6. And even longer. I had a 58 first camper conversion made by dormmobile. 68 21 window delux. 69 first bay window camper and currently a 71 camper last year for the 1600 upright. The first VW bus was made in 1949. I want to sell my VW and find a 4x4 camper but currently happy to hit the road tomorrow with the family in the warrior to see the country. Looking to go from Fl to WA and back again in 5 weeks. We are letting the kids 14 and 10 pick our destinations. I'm sure I'll be posting on the road. Still need to upload the work we did to get ready for this adventure. Anyway loved the vw's more then anything till I saw a old 4x4 chinook now that's a camper with an attitude.
  7. If you lived here you would be home now
  8. Great info. I've been reading from my phone but had to wait to post. Yes I'm looking for a little more ground clearance. Tring to figure out how much adjustment the front torsion bars have now. Looks like I'm staying with the 14" wheels but even with that all the tires places here are telling me no one makes 14" lt tires. Does anyone have a link to a recent tire for sale? I know they are out there just not easy to find. I'll take some pics of the rear end later today. Ultimately we had to press new bushing in the coil overs to make it work and then getting them in was another story. Yes it looks like the interior makeover is a go. I plan on removing carpet and painting. I will post some pics as I go. Hunting today for some roof rails. We plan on hauling two tandem kayaks. Looks like loading from the front will be the way to go. I have seen some pretty nice canoe and kayak racks just need to start with a perimeter rail. Looking at awnings. I was hoping one of the bag awnings was going to work but without having anything for it to mount to I'm unsure. Still trying to hunt down a rv manual for this beauty. I actually thought it must have some type of inverter system. Honestly just found the fuse box and not sure where the battery isolater is and if it has a charger when plugged to shore power will it recharge both batteries. that manual sure would answer a lot of my dumb newbie questions. If no on the inverter that will be a must with today's gizmos and gadgets. I think we can skip in the tv and dvd a little computer and smart phones fill the void. I was thinking of mounting a flat moniter. I figure with a wireless keyboard and we can have the best of both worlds.
  9. A couple questions and progress report. I've been busy working on my warrior and thought I would post my progress. So far. Changed all fluids went with mobile 1 synthetic and mobile gear oil Radiator had so much crude I bought a new all metal radiator (tuff find) but happy with the fit and size. New thermostat flushed and new fluid New steering damper Gas shocks in the front Load carrier spring overs in the back. A little retro fit but same mounts ended up about 3" taller ( I do not have air bags) I thought I may get a smoother ride this way Fuel filter Compression checked out fairly even at 165 (I think that's pretty good for 105,000 miles?) Oil pressure checked out very low at idle but perfect at higher revs ( this worried me but was told its normal for the 3.0) Fixed faulty break lights Checked brakes for wear bled system Waiting on interior leds (as recommended here) So here's my questions I'm not having any luck finding the PDF for the 89 micro warrior. Any ideas where to look? Did I screw up with spring overs instead of air bags? Any opinions? And on to the interior. It's in good shape but feels outdated. Will I decrease the value if I prep and paint over the paneling? Really thinking about moving to a 15" wheel (yes I used the search engine) any downfall to this idea? Where to look for 15" wheels that will mount? If the 15" is a bad idea has anyone moved to a high profile tire? I have more questions but this will get me going again. I really appreciate any input. This summer our family of four plan to leave Florida and loop the whole country. I have a daughter 14 and a son 10. We are well seasoned road warriors but this is gearing up to one of our biggest adventures. We all love this forum! I'll post pics here soon
  10. Unfortunately the sticker on the door frame has been removed. With all the service records and owners manual I thought I would be able to find something. I've used google and the search engine here after looking at tons of pictures I'm still not sure. I found this on you tube: So I thought I had a itasca. Then when I went to insure this beauty they told me there was four itasca models in 89. I'd really like to narrow it down or at least confirm if this is an itasca. Thanks for the replys!
  11. So this followed me home the other day and I'm embarrassed to say I don't know what I have. I think this is a itasca but from what I've read there are more then one this year. It's a 89 v6 very clean and runs great (proud owner). I would love to know if this is a itasca and if yes which one? Any opinions good or bad I'd love to hear them. Thanks to those good people that put together such a great resource. I've been up late reading the archives for weeks. So valuable!
