  1. OK Guys and Gals. I have an Onan 2.2 microlite on my 1985 Granville. I cleaned and adjusted the carb and I have it running great! My question is about the exhaust for it. There is a pipe underneath that comes straight down with a 90 deg elbow and thats it. It does not have a muffler under there. It seems quiet enough I guess. Are the mufflers internal in the genset box or should there be a separate muffler underneath? I'm wondering if I should just add a piece of pipe to get the gasses out from under my rig or if I need a muffler and tailpipe setup? If you have one of these generators It would be nice to see pics of your setup. Thanks in advance!!
  2. Funny this has recent activity. I got home from Iraq in mid July. Changed all fluids including trans. It was really hot at this time 95 deg. I drove the RV on side roads and temps were about 1/3 up the gauge. I get it on the Interstate and temps are higher than I would like to see them. 2/3 scale or a little higher with A/C on and not much better with it off. It never overheated but just higher than I like to see. so I go to Advance and get a new fan clutch before I take off to Key West to get married. well it actually seemed the same or even a tad worse. I drive to Key West from Martinsbueg WV area and back with no overheating but much higher on the gauge than I like to see. I should have bought the new radiator before I left. Long story short I made it there and back with no overheating. This past weekend I replaced the Rad. water pump thermostat and hoses. Its much cooler out now but a few miles down the interstate and the temps start climbing again. so I take it on some back roads and climb a short but steep mountain. Temp gets really high. to the upper white line so I stop and let it run and cool down. with my exhaust leak at the manifold now fixed I'm thinking I just don't hear the clutch fan kicking in with a noticeable roar with the engine temps this high. After all this work and money its still too hot. So the next morning I grab my original fan clutch and put it back in. WOW!! Temps are great now both climbing hills and on the interstate. So I'm sure the fresh radiator and 180 deg thermostat were part of the resolution but don't underestimate your fan clutch as a culprit when you're having these types of problems. The Advance Auto parts fan clutch I bought is probably some chinese crap anyhow. I think I'm going to order an OEM which is made by AISIN. They supplied Toyota and still do I think. I've heard similar stories on the LandCruiser forum as I have a 1986 and the guys there swear by OEM when it comes to fan clutch. Water pumps etc. Just remember that just because its a new part doesn't mean its any good. A bad fan clutch will definitely cause high temps on the highway or climbing hills!! But now all my stuff is new less the fan clutch which is the original I'm sure. I'm getting a new one just to keep with me for piece of mind.
  3. I was wondering if there are any national chain tire shops that can align the Toyhome? I have called a few places and as soon as you say RV they say they can't do it. So what places have you guys and gals used?
  4. Thanks! I was mostly wondering about the oven as I have had a gas stove in my Pop Up. I just looked in my furnace exhaust and have to clear a wasp nest. I will check everything out and report.
  5. Hello all. I have been doing alot of mechanical type stuff to get my Granville ready for my trip to the Keys. I have sorted all of that out. I am going to try my gas stuff out now. 1. Is there a pilot light on the stove that must be lit whenever the gas system is turned on? I don't want gas pumping out into the RV when I have the gas turned on. 2. Same question for the furnace. 3> The hot water heater has a valve which is turned off so I know it won't be putting out gas when the pilot is off. Just want to know what to look for. I had a pop up before with no stove or furnace so there were no pilot lights except for the fridge which I never used for gas operation. 4> Also the fridge can be used with gas although I have not yet tried it. Thanks in advance!!!
  6. Seafoam can be used in the intake for carbon etc. It can also be added directly to the crankcase oil for internal engine cleaning. If there is a buildup of burnt gummed up oil around the rings it can help to clean that. give it a try. Can't hurt a thing!!
  7. My Saturn I mentioned before was using a qt every 300-500 miles and after the piston soak and running seafoam in the engine oil for a bit it slowed to 1500 miles for a qt to burn. The combination of the thicker 15w-40 and engine cleaning helped out alot!!
  8. I used the Walmart super tech brand at 4.27 a qt. I have never been shy about using Walmart oil. I have read many things online and its never given me problems. If it passes testing to be rated dex VI then its better than Dex II or III. This passive flush is very easy for the shade tree mechanic. The hardest part for me was getting the Damn rubber return line off the metal line. Holding the metal so it would'nt crack or bend while working the rubber line loose. Other than that with 2 people. One to start and stop the truck and the other laying underneath its a breeze. I ended up needing 10 qts which with tax was around $50.00 Thats not bad considering I got a better grade of fluid in there and shops typically charge near $200 for this job with some cheap who know's what trans fluid.
  9. The PCV is a definate possability. The things I mentioned before can sometimes help but if compression is low then its most likely engine trouble.. typically in some engines when the rings get gummed up and stick its the oil control ring and not the compression rings. Good luck but for a possible quick fix I would try a engine flush followed by the 15w-40 Shell Rotella Triple protection. You should see at least a decrease in oil consumption unless you have serious engine issues.
  10. In my opinion Kendall oils are not very good. The Shell Rotella oils are awesome! All the Toyota Landcruiser guys including me use it. The Shell Rotella T6 5-40 is a full synthetic and is great too!! Walmart carries them both at a great price. The Seafoam is available at Walmart too.
  11. A comprression and leak down test will show if you have engine problems. One thing you might try is seafoam in your oil as it can clean and free sticking compression and oil control rings. Some brands of oil seem to run through cars I have had in the past like sh*t through a goose. If its hot in your area I recommend trying Shell Rotella triple protection 15-40 which is a diesel engine oil. It will also help clean out your engine if it has gunk etc. This oil has alot more detergents because of all the soot in diesels. On a Saturn of mine which are famous for burning oil because of a bad piston design I put seafoam in each cylender overnight and let it soak. I then cranked over the engine with the spark plugs out to blow out any left over. I also added seafoam to the engine oil and drove around a day. Put in the above mentioned oil and oil consumption has gone wayyy down. These things are inexpensive and just might help you out. Good luck!!
  12. I completed my flush today. I did'nt measure how much came out from the drain but I'm guessing around 4 qts maybe. I drained it then added 2 qts. I had a clear container with a mark indicating 1 qt. I then removed the return hose from my cooler and stuck it in the clear container. started the truck and let one qt pump out. Shut off the truck and added 1 qt and repeated this process until I went through all 8 qts I had. I still had to add 2 qts after that to get it full so 10qts total. I used the DEX VI which is the newest stuff and is backwards compatible with DEX II and III. So far so good. Shifts seem easier and I now have all new fuid in my tranny for much less than a shop would charge!!
  13. Yes I do know about the drain plug. The flush I am doing is called the Rodney flush over on the Landcruiser forum. I will drain the pan pull it and replace the filter/gasket. I will measure how much came out. I will then refill it with that amount. Then I pull the return line coming from my trans cooler. Put the hose in a container with a mark showing one qt. I have someone start the engine and shut it off when I get out one qt. I then add one qt and repeat the process until I have clean fluid coming out of the cooler. This proceedure is a great way to get 100% fluid change right in the driveway without having to pay a shop with a pressure flush machine which are not recommended by alot of trans gurus.
  14. I have a 1985 chassis Granville. I thought I read somewhere the trans holds 7.9 qts. I bought 8 and I will be doing a passive flush tomorrow. Just want to make sure I have enough fluid. BTW its an auto of course.
  15. I have not yet tried the propane operation. I am going to check all of my gas lines for condition/leaks this week. I have run it on 12v and 110V so I know that works. Thanks for the advice!!
  16. I just read the post about running the fridge on gas while driving. I was planning to run mine on 12V while in motion. Does'nt the alternator charge the house battery while driving? I just started using my 1985 Granville and have no books for it. I just thought 12V would work. Please educate me!! Paul
  17. Hello all. I'm back from Iraq and starting to work on my 1985 Granville. I want to put in a 3 row all metal radiator. CSF makes good ones I guess. Any recommendations with part numbers would be greatly appeciated!!
  18. Yeah I'm still in Iraq and won't be home until end of July. I'm just getting ideas for now. To WME does your stinky hose fit inside the new bumper? I'm thinking of replacing the whole bumper and I like your setup. Just wondering with the reciever at the halfway point in the bumper if the hose still fits in there.
  19. Yeah I guess you're right. I'm planning on some fabrication and welding. Just looking for ideas and lessons learned by others. It's much easier when you get good input from those before you. Thanks Paul
  20. Wow! I guess there are not many with hitches? Oh well back to the top. Lets see what ya have.
  21. OK. I have been searching and searching. I'm hoping that all of the folks out there with a hitch on their RV will post up pics with what they did and suggestions for those of us who want to put one on our RV. I know there are many here who say don't tow with these RV's. That has been discussed over and over again here. This post is for pro towing types. So pretty please with sugar on top can we all see what you guys who do it have? Thanks in advance folks!!
  22. Well thank you Troy! I'm ;ooking forward to getting home and taking care of a few things. It is 27 years old after all. It's a nice start but I plan to make it better and do my best to preserve it for years to come!!
