  1. Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah to all.

So , today I am walking my dog and had some more gadgets for my Toyota 1987 Escaper. I enter through the cab and see that things were thrown throughout the cabin. Now I know someone was got into the my Toyota! Empty gas container was disassembled and the gas gap was taken off gas tank and placed inside. I get to the cab and find my whole steering column busted with wires cut and hanging everywhere, see photos. My question is how do I put this back together? I had just put that club on maybe 2 days ago 🙏👣

  2. Hi, everyone and Happy Holidays😊

Okay,  I was following the diagrams that Derek posted regarding fresh water tank lines.  I am attempting to winterize my 1987 Escaper.

I went to the water heater first, only to find that the drain had no cover, just the opening . So I gather that my water heater is drained.

Next ,I went to the rear kitchen sink, bathroom and by water pump to see if I could turn off the  valve to water . Of course I can’t identify a hot or cold turn off valve...?

I found  that poop drain, and on each side there are to push pull knobs, that do what?  I could not find the fresh water tank drain plug...? I turned the Toy on after pouring 2 gallons of  RV antifreeze in the water tank fill outlet and then turned on the water pump ? Nothing from any of the faucets .

Obviously missing the proper connections. I’ve watched Utube videos and nothing is the same in my Toyota Escaper that matches the procedures taken !!!?.??

Frustrated and confused as I have the Manuel’s also.

    HELP PLEASE 🙏

I am happy for the feed back on the tire chains. Basic steel always worked and I am trying to keep it simple ...while being prepared.
Thank you 😊 I always like more brains involved 👣

You better check that 7 day rule again. New York City doesn't allow parking in a space or more than 24 hours. I used to have a boyfriend in the Bronx. His friend, the beat cop for that neighborhood , warned me to always draw my curtains closed so I didn't get hassled for RV parking. My van had a pop top so it wasn't real obvious.

As far as chains, they are only required for severe snow emergency's. If it's not a snow emergency you had better not get caught with chains on. They damage the pavement.  I grew up upstate where it really snows and I never put chains on until I came to California. You certainly don't need them to drive across the street.

    Yes Linda,

I did check and since I don’t have commercial plates the 100th Pct. said it was okay. I am not parking in front of any homes and not violating any other parking restrictions. So, I am good till this Thurs. 😂. As far as the tire chains I was wondering are you carrying them in case of emergency? Thank you for your response.

  6. Hi all,

Another question regarding dual tire chains, for emergency situations. I live in New York City and we have to move our Toy every 7 days on the street. We also get a fair amount of snow, as I am located right off of the Atlantic Ocean. What has been your experience and/or your recommendations.

    Thank you in advanced.

If your torsion bars are working properly and not worn out then you can crank them up to get a bit of lift.  One of my torsion arms was worn out and I had to replace them both.  The amount of lift you can get will be limited by the bumpers and the amount of control arm travel you want.  You start running into problems with anything over about 0.75" above stock height (see FSM for how to measure reference front end ride height).  You also run into limitations with alignment, although with a '92 you may have the cam type adjustment instead of the shims that I have on my IFS '87 front end.  On my rig the ability to align while maintaining decent control arm travel was enough of an issue that I went with a ball joint spacer to compensate.  See this post about how I used a ball joint spacer to get 1" of front lift:

This is the same kind of set up I'm using (Ride-Rites, not AirLift, but same functionality) and I'm running about 35 PSI in each bag and I can change it on the fly to compensate for changing road conditions and to level the rig.

I was told by mechanic that I need new torsion bars on my 1987 Escaper. Took care of the leaf springs, cannot find what size or where to get replacement torsion bars. Any suggestions? Thank you

  8. Hi I have a 1987 Toyota Escaper, I went to turn the propane gas tank on and smelt gas, no leaking sounds. The tank has not been used in a while and it is registering at half full.

    Please advise and thank you.

i hope all had a wonderful holiday 😊

Old Man Emu Leaf Springs are an option.  They don't list our vehicles as a "correct fit" but there are two models that do indeed fit and function well. There are two options with the difference being the total 'lift', CS010R and CS009R.  The CS010R  springs will get more lift than the CS009R model.  These springs were designed to lift a truck with regular loading about 2" and so with our heavy load then end up being close to stock height.  The CS009R springs have one less leaf (6-leaf like the OEM springs) and will be about 3/4" to 1" lower, but are otherwise identical to the 7-leaf CS010R.   Cost is ~$230 to $250 for two springs plus you have to buy bushings (I suggest a poly set rather than rubber).  The safe option is to buy the CS010R's and install and check height (it will settle about another 1/2" after break in).  If it's too high then remove the extra leaf and check again.  Remember that you can also adjust front height a little with the torsion bars to match where your rear ends up.  I'm assuming you have a 21' rig like mine and thus similar weight.  I started with the CS010R's but ended up removing a leaf.  But I have air bags to compensate and fine tune ride height so it's hard to say what would work best for you.

Here is an overly long thread with way more than you wanted to know about leaf springs and ride height:

    Thank you Atlanta Camper 👣🙏

Ah ha!  We have the same configuration I believe.  The issue I have with the sofa fold out bed is that it's too short for me at 5'11".  I had to sleep with my head near the sink and feet hanging off a bit near the driver's seat headrest.  With sofa folded out and dinette turned into the 'grandson bed' there is this odd gap of about 5 or 6 inches between the sofa bed and the dinette bed.  So one day I decided to make it One Big Bed.  I attached a plank on some hinges to the back of the folding part of the sofa and rigged it up so that it securely rests on the edge of the dinette seats.  Ta-da!  A (nearly) king size bed!  I can sleep with feet/head window to window with enough room.  I carry a rolled up 2" memory foam mattress that I roll out on top of the cushions and boy is it really comfortable!  (a lot of room to store the memory foam during travel, but it's a luxury I can't give up now). The use of the short post supporting the back of the sofa folded down is critical but I assume you already have this.

If this modification interests you I will go take a few pictures.  It's completely transformed the sleeping in the camper for the better.
