Just got done with a Tune Up on my 22REC. Yes unfortunately I have all the extra emissions hardware. The mechanic did a major tune up. Replaced the timing belt with metal guides and everything on the front. Replaced the Valve cover gasket that was leaking. Adjusted the valves and cleaned the throttle plate as suggested by members. Afterwards it started right up. Then I was asking the mechanic about a wire that ran on top of the valve cover because mine has duct tape on it. He moved it an the motor died immediately. I went in and the motor started right up again. Moved the wire and it happened again. So we stopped doing that. Previously I occasionally had what I thought were starter problems but i think this wire may have been the cause all along. The wire runs from the drivers side from the Coil/Ignitor across the top of the valve cover then down in between the passenger side of the engine and whatever the box is that goes to the air filter. I am pretty sure at least it is connected to the starter. Anyone have any thoughts. The mechanic doesn't want to take any of the wiring apart and I don't either until I know what I am dealing with. Is this factory wiring? I have seen the wire in many 22RE photos so I believe it is. I would appreciate any help I can get. Thanks in advance.
It runs from the green connector over the valve cover between the gap that says Toyota and EFI. All the tape (electrical and duct) has been there since I bought it. Engine has always run great but it had leaks.
My rig is much older than yours. The wire you identified is running from the ignitor to I’m not sure where.
Looking at your photos, especially #3, I can see cut/chafing marks on the outer jacket (near the drivers fender.
I suspect the wire under the duct tape has also been damaged. I would very carefully remove any tape covering any part of that wire and inspect everything underneath.
It sounds like you have a broken/compromised wire there. Moving the wire off the valve cover breaks the connection. That would be my first item to check. Good luck.
