sunrader2000
Hi, everyone. I have an 84 Sunrader 4X4. I've had it since '96 but the last couple of years, it's been "resting" with friends while I did other things. I've got it back now and the poor baby needs some care. The clutch broke completely and it had to be towed across the country to me. I've replaced the clutch, but one thing I'm concerned about is the 4 wheel drive. I doubt anyone has used it in two years and I'm wondering, can I just try it and see if it works? What I mean is, if it doesn't, will something go horribly wrong and break and the thing won't move at all, like what happened with the clutch? Or will it just maybe not work and I could put it back in 2 wheel and drive to a transmission shop? I've always been a little fuzzy on the transmission stuff but before I had a husband who understood these things. Alas, the Sunrader outlasted the marriage and now I need to figure out a few things on my own.
Shoprat
Howdy 2000 I was a mechanic for 35 years. Most 4 wheel drive components are gears in an oil bath, so as long as the lube levels are where they should be, you'll be fine.
sunrader2000
I was concerned about the lube. I remember lubing the undercarriage at certain points every now and then. Should I lube it before trying it? I'm positive it hasn't been done in quite some time.
Shoprat
Yep, taking it in for an oil change and lube job would be a good idea. If the place is reputable, they will check all fluid levels. This includes the levels in the rear differential, front differential, transfer case, power steering, washer jar, brakes, etc. I like to change my oil and filter every 3000 miles or so. Some folks like to change oil in a motorhome at 5000 miles if it's all highway miles, but I like to be on the safe side.
