ciel and marks odyssey
Hi everyone - we've got a 1979 Toyota Odyssey that was brought to Alberta from the states that needs to pass the out-of province inspection. The inspection mechanic says that the rear axle seals are leaking and that the brake shoes are contaminated. (I've looked at the axle replacement stuff by the way...). What recommendations would you folks have to go ahead with the repair? Apparently the only parts available are from Los Angeles and they have not been able to find an "outer seal". This is what we've been told by the inspection mechanic anyway. This motorhome is vintage and beautiful and we want to keep it on the road! Derek up North
Which axle do you have installed? 5 bolt or 6 bolt?

Hi Assuming you have the full floating axle I got the seals at Toyota dealer a couple of years ago. If its not the full floating axle then seals are for sure readily available at Toyota. ciel and marks odyssey
in answers to your question Derek, it's a five lug ( do I really have to upgrade if it's been working for all these years?) and Jim, I did call the local Toyota and although they "aren't sure" they think they have the outer and inner seals as well as brake pads. Not too many people looking for 79 replacement parts at this point... Would anyone else like to weigh in on this? We're going to have a mechanic friend take a looksie on Weds and see what he thinks - gotta find experts like you all who have the wisdom and experience of this issue - Thanks in advance, Ciel
