broke lug on rear dually, some info on this job

Recommended Posts

as i mentioned on my is 53k on an 86 toyota motorhome unusual? post, while  replacing my 12 yr old tires on my new to me gulf stream, i found out the hard way that the drivers side dually is left hand thread(this was later verified by linda as a 1986 only feature) -- anyway, you don't want to brake a lug, it was a bear to replace, and i couldn't have done it without my good size impact wrench -- this was needed to seperate the hub from the drum -- the procedure for removing the hub is the same as on some toyota landcruisers, for which there are several videos online, except on the landcruiser the drum easily seperates from the hub -- i did find one video for an 89 toyota mh: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sSD03At4mOE (yes, its a woman who did this job, and also did one of the better how-tos that i've seen -- so much for stereotypes)

the problem is that in order to remove a broken lug, you need to seperate the hub from the drum, which means you have to remove the hub/drum as one piece, as the hub is bolted from the inside of the drum -- very heavy for a 74 yr old, particularly lifting it back on.

if you're doing this just to replace seals, or do the brakes, you don't seperate the drum/hub -- also, the videos on the landcruiser have good info on doing the removal and setup of the center hub, with the cone spacers, and how to reassemble and do the bearing pre-load

next project: install olympia catalytic heater

since i was not the first to try and remove these lug nuts the wrong way, i decided to replace all 6, due to the rounding of corners done by someone's impact wrench -- my local dealership wanted $93 for 6🤯 -- so i used the link linda gave me,Toyota Parts Deal, $38 + $14 shipping
