need a rooftop A/C unit

Recommended Posts

The first thing you should do is to make sure that your 1979 dolphin model is set up to handle an air conditioning. My 1981 motor home only had a 15 amp electric service which was too small to run a standard roof top AC unit (I have since upgraded the electric supply and bus panel to 30 amps). If you have 30 amp mains check to see if you have any electric wiring at or near your roof vent to power the AC unit from.

If you have all of this I would strongly suggest that you look into the low profile AC units as they are just a little over 7" tall and weigh a little less than the full size ones. They put out as much cooling as the larger profile units but do not have the wind resistance that the bigger ones do and every bit of "sail" we unfurl slows us down.

If you have an adequate electric supply panel and you have the wiring already in place it is very simple to install the roof AC unit. It is held in place with 4 bolts that come through the 14" vent cut out so there is no cutting or drilling necessary. Just get it on the roof (a task in itself as they are rather heavy), remove your old air vent, put down the gasket, and set it in place. The 4 mounting bolts are tightened from inside the coach.

I am sure that most RV dealers will stock AC units as they are a common replacement and upgrade item.

You can find them online but shipping is going to be high as they are heavy. You can find them on eBay and Craigslist also, just make sure you are buying a new unit from a dealer so that you get a warranty and make sure you are buying a new unit if you are paying new unit pricing.

Here are a couple of online dealers that sell AC units

Low profile units will run you a little more

The lower btu units will run about the same price as the larger ones

Most AC units are sold as 2 pieces (the outside unit and the inside controls and cover) so make sure when you get a price it is for a "complete" ready to install unit.

You need to decide on a size. Some people like the smaller 7500 and 9000 btu units others like the larger 13500 btu units. I like the big ones as they cool fast and work well even when outside temps are over 100 degrees.

Most units can take an electric heater coil so they can double as a furnace that you can use when plugged into shore power (saving your propane for other things).

Hello...I am also kinda new here and in S.E. Wisconsin....I have seen local roof top a/c on Craigslist but they are very rare (usually when someone is parting out a motorhome)...maybe a wanted to buy add in Craigslist might help.

I am curious as to where in S.E. WI. you are? I am in Racine. Have you read about the Midwest Toy-In (Central IL.)..the first wekend in Oct. I plan on being there.

Good luck with your search...I will keep my eyes and ears open and if I find anything I will let you know...
