  1. Hello all, I have not posted here for a few years but am doing so given the fact that I know many of you possess the knowledge pertaining to my specific situational anxieties. I am going to be driving my 1981 22r 20ft 4-speed (L45) with 15X,XXX (odo stopped working years ago) Odyessy on not enough leaves but Rite-ride Airbags no compressor, upgraded 4-runner master cylinder, factory (too small) calipers/rotors, from Long Beach to Humboldt where my friend has some land. My rv runs greats, I've had her for almost 10 years and she got me through University up in Santa Cruz. I have driven her up to Santa Cruz probably 25 times up and back from Long Beach and never had a failure besides a mechanic not reattaching my brake line (I rather do my own work if possible) and losing hydraulic brake pressure. This being said....... I know all the different passes, ranges etc, that are necessary to traverse to get to SC or back. I once, in hopes of an initial attempt to get to true Norcal had to traverse Mt. Tamalpais because PCH was closed due to a landslide. Upon the descent of about 25 hairpins and extreme engine braking, I noticed and significant loss of brake power and the smell of burning gear oil. Turns out my rear drums got so hot they melted my axle seal (outer if I remember correctly) and the secondary seal also failed resulting in my brake shoes being coated in oil and the drums not functioning. Year and years later, about a year ago, I noticed they failed once more, where I was parked and it looked as if the seals burst with force (maybe I should check the breather on the axle housing for blockage). So after this, I have only driven a few 40-mile trips at a time up and down the SoCal coast. ...Anyway this was to try to elaborate my anxiety and concern for this trip. My friend who lives up in Humboldt and has a bunch of old 22re 4x4s and a few chinooks, advised me to take the 5 the whole way from Santa Cruz. I like this idea but we are in an extreme heat wave here where inland towns that the 5 passes through are hitting 115 and are 93 degrees at 3 am. Maybe this was more of an anxiety vent but any advice from those who have climbing/descending, mountain pass or experience traveling this route would be greatly appreciated. Thank you friends, -Zach
  2. Decided this would be a good day to flush old fluid and replace with DOT 4 synthetic. Not my first brake job, by a long shot... but anyway, started with removing some old fluid from MC reservoir then refilling with new. Next, began bleeding brakes at right rear and spent a lot of time there, pumping brakes and draining old fluid, until new clean fluid appeared, and then until all air was removed. Left rear went faster, but... when I started on right front, things just didn't feel right anymore... pedal would go way down and not seeing much fluid pressure at any of the bleeder valves—some, but not much. Never felt like I could get any of the four bled properly after that. (Kept reservoir topped off entire time and never let it get very low.) Been at this a few hours now and don't feel like I'm getting any closer. Not seeing any fluid leaks anywhere. Does this sound like a bad master cylinder possibly? Not sure how old the unit is—looks to be AISIN. Is it possible for an old MC to go bad in middle of job, due to lots of heavy pumping? Appreciate any ideas 🙂
  3. We just retired and are lucky to take over the use (and costs) of my father-in-laws Toyota Dolphin, 1992, but the chassis is either 1990 (per father in law) or 1991 (per dealership), but not having much luck in finding places that can work on the clutch and brakes, (and was told by the Toyota dealership that we have to replace the timing belt every 6 years, and wondered about that frequency). I would love to hear about any auto repair shops that you use and can recommend, that will repair these small motor homes. We are looking forward to driving it to all states, so any state info will be welcome. We thought the manual clutch was going out, as slipping when on hills, but the dealership said the clutch was fine. Kinda scratching our heads about that one.
  4. I've gone to autozone and looked at the brakes they have there for 83 Toyota pickup which is what is under my 84 Odyssey. Nothing matches. Does anybody know what brakes are on the front of it. here's a pic of them
  5. Good Day All I have a 1988 Toyota dolphin motorhome with 51K miles. I was getting everything getting ready for the season. When I checked the brakes the pedal felt soft. I looked and noticed that a trail of fluid had run down the passenger inside dual tire. I replaced both rear the brake cylinders and the brake shoes. The drums looked good. I bled the rear brakes and the brake pedal felt firm once again. When I drove the vehicle the pedal once again felt soft. So I bled all the brakes again, both front and rear. Once again I got the same result. The pedal was firm till I started the engine. With a running engine the pedal was soft. Should I assume that the leak that I saw on the passenger inside dual was part of the problem and the real problem is the brake master cylinder. Any help would be appreciated Thanks
  6. In the next month or six weeks I'm going to need to get my brakes done on my 18 foot, 1984 Sunrader. I have no place to do the work myself other than a very dusty driveway. I live about 30 miles north of Klamath Falls, Oregon, so would hope to get it done in the general area. Klamath Falls would be my 1st choice, Medford (80 miles away) #2, Bend (110 miles) #3. Any recommendations of shops/mechanics would be appreciated! What is a fair price to pay for a good, complete job? Thanks, Steve
