  1. I got the vin # from the guy selling the camper and ran it on the toyota site. Basically it said bring the car to toyota because the head gaskets are bad. So i then go to my local toyota dealer, they can't even run the vin. They say it's a US car. Hmmmmm
  2. Yes, good info. What is the the difference between engines that need the repair and those that don't?
  3. I keep reading about these v6 head repairs. Is there a way to find out if the work has been done? Kahuna in kanada
  4. Recently I was told that there are 2 versions of the v6 that were used in toyota trucks/campers. Can someone confirm and or explain this? I was told that only one version had the head problem? Thanks Kahuna in Kanada
  5. UPDATE: ok, my buddy (the real mechanic) and I got the job finished today. We had a hell of a time getting the crank bolt out. Tried impact, tried jamming the pulley with a drift. Nada. Shazam, there's a a plastic inspection cover for the ring gear! We jammed the flywheel and got that bolt out. The old seal basically fell out. It was hard as hell and had a rip in it. New one in, new belts, back together. Going to clean it and run it tomorrow and make sure the leak is gone. Kahuna in Kanada
  6. I'm taking the crank off tomorrow, just to be sure, it is a right thread right? I ordered the oil pump o ring from toyota, wow, rip off. Will replace it too, and the little o ring under the one bolt.
  7. the truck only has 125k km which is only 78 k miles. i can't imagine it needs a new pump? i see that there is an O ring on a bolt related to the oil pump.
  8. I have an 86 toyota slumber queen, 126k km. runs great, no problem. Seems to have a small oil leak, not enough to show on the dip stick but there is some oil being thrown around the engine compartment and on to the inside of the hood. Any ideas where I should start looking? Thanks in advance. Kahuna in Kanada
  9. About 6 weeks ago, I picked up a really clean 86 Slumber Queen. Drove it home and parked it. It was cold here in Canada so didn't really have a chance for a shake down cruise. At the start of the holiday, a buddy and I headed off for the Florida Keys. The short of it is, we did around 6500 km round trip, did some great urban camping. Paid for 5 nights out of 13 away. Made it to Key West and back. The truck was a champ. Only issue was the heat related, the brake fluid got really hot and affected the brakes and power steering. Got a lot better once I replaced the heat shield. Mileage was not great at the start but improved dramatically with heavier grade oil.
  10. Looks like the heat shield did the trick. Yes i am glad that the PO didn't pitch it. Toyota put that shield on for a reason.
  11. Is there an aftermarket cruise control that works well on a 22RE?
  12. I've arrived in florida from canada in my 86 slumber queen. Smooth sailing till yesterday. No brakes! When i bought the rig i noticed that the heat shield for the exhaust manifold was in the trunk. When everything cooled off the brakes were fine. We leave today heading farther south, brakes fine then gone again. I've now put the heat shield back on. The master cylinder and booster were really hot. Was the heat shield the likely cause of my problem?
  13. good call, very cold here but managed to get the old girl inside, took the centre console out and the o/d light was unplugged. light is now working, assuming switch is as well. someone did a hack job installing the stereo. looks like they hijacked the thick red wire for the 12v plug. it has a yellow battery sticker on it... 14. Thanks all, I have a great set of travelling tools from my Westy, metric too! I always have jumper cables, I have a booster box. I'll get some spare belts. Kahuna in Kanada
  15. My 'new' toyota is an 86 Slumber Queen with the 22Re. Are there any spares I should consider carrying? I carry a few things on my Westy. I remember my dad always had a ballast resister in the glove box for his old mopars. Kahuna in Kanada
  16. I have a 78 Westy, the 86 Slumber Queen I just picked up feels huge!
  17. Great tip. Is the light meant to come on only when od is engaged, or when switch is on? A cb has been removed and the 12v outlet doesn't work so things may be unplugged behind there. Kahuna in Kanada
  18. Picked up a very nice unit, when i called the guy he said it didn't have roof air. When i got there to look at it it was obvious that it did at one time have a/c. Does anyone know what capacity roof air they had? Kahuna in Kanada
  19. I'd didn't explain very well. The o/d is working just fine, the switch isn't. I can't turn the o/d off. The dash light isn't working either.
