  1.  I've not replaced the toilet or fridge so I will stay away from that but to your generator issue. Are you just looking to recharge or run things like your A/C? If all you want to do is charge your laptop you would have many easy options. The smallest generator you can find will do that. You can do that even with solar. (which if all I wanted was a laptop charge is what I would do).

Now, you say the one on board doesn't work........onboard ones that came with a unit are pretty handy. They will run off the truck gas tank which means no filling. You might have someone look and see if it can be repaired. The carb may just need cleaned.

Otherwise the inverter generators seem to be the way to go. They are supposed to be a little more efficient and are a little more compact. They are supposed to be quieter but that seems to be a debateable point.

     IMO.

  2.  My 87 is covered by Erie also. ($10 a month). They did tell me (because I asked) they do not offer things like towing on a vehicle this old so I added Good Sam for that.

     It's still less than $200 a year.

The bottom line R12 is made of "unobtainium" and for good reason. I kind of think sticker shock will put an end to the AC project. Backwards facing vent windows and 60 MPH.

I notice R12 is selling on eBay for as low as $19 a can. I'm not advocating that, just noting. I can run overhead A/C (which works good) and generator if I really needed A/C.

I've seen fittings designed to attach to the exhaust of the honda inverters on ebay. I'm thinking they may fit other brands?

I've seen some fittings for something or another........they were weld on. I can do that but I was just curious as the route here. From what I saw on the fittings you could make one for about a 10th of the price.

Thank you everyone for the responses. I would like to add that it has seven new tires and roof was resealed last year. Supposedly never leaked.  It looks really nice. I am going to look at it next week. I just wish it had the 6 lug rear axle :(  the thing is, I have not seen many of these online for sale at all. And for some reason they all seem to be over $8,000 in the same condition.  How risky is the rear axle? Is there something I can check or a daily maintenance routine to keep it running like it is?

I had the same issue looking for one. I would see one and it would be sold long before I could get there. I had hoped to buy one a little nicer than I did but mechanically including the rear axle this one was pretty nice. The "nearly new tires" were dry rotted really bad. The one you are looking at is cleaner than mine from the sounds of it but I paid  half that. I think I have the leaks sealed. LOL I just put new tires on and the guy who did it said he remembers one of these coming in with the rims you describe and he said never again.

Replacing the rear end shouldn't be difficult for a mechanic but the issue is trying to find one. Now try finding the fake dually rims/axle when one breaks. But yeah, it's hard to pass one up if you are in an area that not many pop up.

  6.  These are pretty cool and pretty easy to work on and while with some of the smaller ones I would be less concerned with the fake dually but $6000 for one this old and not having the good rear end seems a bit pricey. I passed on one a few years ago because of the axle issue. I'm not one to stress over things but I've seen the damage when one of these wheels break and as far as you know they are over 40 years old. They have lasted over 100,000 miles but...................

With the newer inverter generators you can fit them much easier. Mine doesn't have one either but I'm pretty sure an inverter generator will fit in the rear cargo hold. It's not as convenient as one built with the unit though.

Paint (any) will not adhere to silicone. If you don’t remove the old caulking and clean the surface really well, your new paint will just peel off.

Yes but it doesn't have to be neat without a proper paint job. There also isn't a chemical stripper for latex house paint. That's a lot of sanding.

  8.  The problem is the previous "hand paint job" is horrible. To do anything with it would require it to be stripped and I'm not interested in putting that much into it. There is no other way to make it smooth.  The silicone is all over the place also. It would take forever. I can paint and I will paint the truck part. Luckily it wasn't "painted". This will cover a ton of flaws and seal the camper. I've seen a few done. One where the person was asking some pretty big bucks (and they did the truck part also).

I don't think it looks all that bad for a camper.

  9.  Figured I would keep track of things here. Fixed (or at least stopped them from leaking ) a few leaks. I wanted to brighten things up while not painting it all white. I took the wallpaper down and fixed a spot in the back that was pretty soft. Did a vinyl background and painted the counter top white. I didn't like the homemade microwave stand so it's gone. I'll put the microwave on the back counter after allowing things to sit for awhile.

There is some damage on the overhang......not too bad. I'm waiting on tires to get here. I've pretty much decided to paint it with bedliner to hide all the ugly on the outside.

Overhead air works. Truck air does not. I hope it's already been converted.

  10.  Interesting.......I almost bought a VW.......guy had it listed for $8k. He was 4.5 hours away. I knew I would never get there in time to buy it and it sold quick.

My MIL had a MB Sprinter. Dang it was nice. Diesel, and ran great. Big bucks though. She tried to get me to take it but I don't like to be responsible for something like that when it's not mine. She ended up selling it.

Everything I've read says the Nissan V6's are good for many miles so I hope to not have to worry about something else for a long while. Though if I ever run across a great deal on a Sunrader all bets are off. LOL

  11.  I hadn't planned on using my propane system until and if I can completely go through it all. I don't really trust a 35 year old propane system. I'm new at this but I had glanced into the propane cubby and noticed it had the outlet in the middle. I would think a horizontal tank would discharge from the top but I was still happy to see it's labelled for "this side up if used horizontal".
