  1. as for mileage, the trucks that have done the swaps have all reported improved mileage since they are no longer driving "with their foot in it" trying to get the truck up to speed. so 1. mile would increase over what you are getting now, your engine is no longer struggling to get up to speed or maintain speed. 2. the powerstroke may be bulletproof in your opinion but its still wrapped in a ford wrapper. enough said, you still have "toyota" reliability, this V8 is a 300,000 mile engine 3. I dont know, what would it to to the GVWR? that would be G V W R not G W V R. I am guessing if you have a V6 truck the GVWR would increase by the 60 pounds that it is lightened up by removing a heavy cast iron engine and replacing it with an aluminum block engine. 4. braking? I am guessing that it would be better since you lightened the truck by 60 lbs. just because the horsepower is there does not mean it will make your truck "just take off out of control" so "now adding a V8" wont change a thing to overload your truck. can you explain how this would happen with a lighter engine? these are all facts, nothing more to post on this subject to counteract invalid, not well thought out silly responses condemning a great swap. Mcshank, the V6 came in 88 trucks with the same 3.0 as 89-95. I dont know if any 88 motorhomes came with 1 but they do fit the 88 compartments the same as 89-95s. I owned an 884runner V6, same amount of space in engine compartment believe it or not (give or take 1/4-1/2 inch here or there) FWIW, the Lexus LS400 and SC400 the 1UZFE came in have a top speed of 145... yep that is 145, how many of you have seen any LS or SCs going, lets just say 100? the power is there right? you may have had one leave you at a stop light but never have you seen one going 145. the brakes on these cars are no larger than your cab chassis trucks are and the LS 400 is a damn heavy car(a GVWR of 5600LBS) - ever seen one have a hard time stopping because of the V8 in it? no, I didnt think you would. I do love when someone brings a knife to a gun fight..................
  2. ditto to the above response, 20Rs, 22Rs and 22REs came in celicas. same exact engine as the trucks. the car trans (5 Speed probably wont be as strong as you 4 speed) and it will have a rear slip shaft driveshaft that slides into your transmission and your truck may be a flanged driveshaft that bolts to a flange
  3. it gets better mileage than the V6 did that it came with, the V6 always felt like it was under load- when you let off the gas it would fall flat on its face, with the v8 it isnt working as hard to move the same amt. of weight. The V8 weighs 60-70 LBs mess than the V6. An added bonus is the LS400 has a120 amp alternator and the SC400 has a 170 alt. with the proper wiring it could be used to charge house batteries with ease.
  4. You are correct on almost all accounts, proper maintenance is key to long term toy ownership. these are made to last 25 yrs plus- Just as a note for people considering the swap thats all. I didnt say the swap was a snap, rather to do the wiring was a snap. As for the 22r 5 speeds they are very weak, if you use your 5th wisely they can last a very long time. 5th gear was an after thought in these trans. it is located on the end of a shaft outside of a bearing cap.... The v6 trans is what I was refering to and yes it can be bolted up to a 4 cylinder as well. 22RTE belhousing just FYI. if someone would be doing this swap that would be tha way to go. and your looking at around 300,000 miles on the R150 trans before any issues may arise if any. again, proper maintenace is the key here. Anyone doing this swap would be better off to go to the local pick and pull and pull the pedal assembley as 1 piece (3,4 bolts) cost, 20-25.00. you only have to add the clutch pedal, brackets were built into all of your trucks for a clutch pedal. the clutch, and disk are inexpensive and required flywheel is as well and can be sourced locally, all of that would be less than a rebuilt trannys torque convertor alone (rebuilds requires use of new torque convertor or no warranty) a used flywheel runs 25-55- you dont have to have a new one, a new high performance clutch (much better than an OEM) 139-189 depending on performance level you want. last I checked a good quality rebuild is well over 500, so to say you can get a couple rebuilds for what it would cost to swap to a manual is off base. The driveshaft doesnt always have to be cut in every case.
  5. The V6 manual trans is pretty much indestructable, swapping out to manual is not as bad as 1 would think. You can use your existing engine ECU even though it is an auto ECU- it can be fooled. when I say fooled I dont mean in a hokey unreliable bite you in the behind later kind of fooled, but just simple wiring mods will make your ECU happy. Any1 on this board could do the wiring for it. I have wired a Lexus Auto ECU for a manual trans, its the same type of ECU. I have had friends who swapped in a manual in 4 and 6 cyl trucks (Toyota) and its all the same. I figured some of you had considered this swap before and wondered if it can be done without headaches, just thought I would clarify that it is do-able. especially the 4cyl guys with that weak trans. I have a 4 speed manual in my 83 21 ft sunrader and I love it. an auto would be nice but onlt if I had a turbo diesel to back it up
  6. okay, I am curious how many of the auto owners want to swap to a manual transmission? has anyone done this on their motorhome?
  7. The later hubs will bolt up (this is Bryan B, I am not being allowed to log in under my screen name so I created another acct, deal with it) but the brake caliper will not. The 83 caliper is a 2 3/8s bore and the 91 is a 2 5/8s bore, so its not too big (1/4") of a differance in braking The 6 lug adapter hubs and brake rotor bolted right up, but the brake pads on the 83 caliper have to be worn to fit around the wider rotor. so it will work on an 83 but just dont get the brake calipers, you cant use them at all.
