  1. Has anyone done this. I know the radiator fans create drag and also consume several HP at hiway speeds. I'm looking at doing this but am curious if anyone else has done it? John Mc 88 Dolphin 4 Auto
  2. I'm wondering if these would be a viable replacement for leaking airbags? (I haven't tested my airbags yet, maybe this week when I get it inside the neighbors garage, (its 15Deg F outside today) John Mc 88 Dolphin 4 Auto
  3. Red Green, My Hero:ThumbUp::ThumbUp: (For those who don't know who Red Green is, google, or check your PBS station. Make sure you use the restroom before watching as you'll laugh so hard, you may have an accident.) John Mc 88 Dolphin 4 Auto
  4. It might be OK, Might not. I'm not an expert on this subject, but I looked extensively into the issue for months before I bought my ToyHouse. 18ft is short, maybe run it across a scale and see what it weighs, make sure the weight reflects a fully loaded ToyHouse, water, sewage, stuff in the cabinets, etc etc. Then do the math and see where it stands as far as weight distribution per axle. There are several well written documents on this site, and also on the Yahoo group. For my application, I just can't take that risk, (I'll be traveling to Northern Alaska). If I suffer a major failure up there, I may need to make a decision to pull the plates and abandon the vehicle. Keep in mind, If the axle breaks, the best that would happen would be a tow charge to a shop, (couple hundred bucks tow, plus putting on the new axle). The worst could be unimaginatively bad). I would ask your mechanic how much he would charge you to do an axle swap if you drop off a new axle at his shop? John Mc 88 Dolphin 4 Auto
  5. Looks like I'll go ahead and add another cooler. Probably not Football field size, but large. I think its a very economical way of getting more miles out of the Tranny. I'll try and get some temperature data before/after the addition. Thanks John Mc 88 Dolphin 4 Auto
  6. HydroFlame Model FA 7916D Blower motor # 31036 I'm a very light sleeper and I guarantee this squeal will have me awake every time the furnace kicks on. Its 22 years old, so I bit the bullet and bought a new blower motor. There are a couple threads here and on other sites on how to replace it, Looks like maybe a two hour job. I see many companies have them, I Paid just under $100 with shipping included. This should be the last of the major expenses for the ToyHouse Overhaul. John Mc 88 Dolphin 4 Auto

  8. I looked, didn't see anything. Also, be careful if your buying a TV, make sure it has a digital tuner. JOhn Mc 88 Dolphin 4 Auto
  9. I can see mine from the outside with the hood down (now that I know what I'm looking at). A flashlight will help, Look in the upper left corner of the grill just above the "T in Toyota John Mc 88 Dolphin 4 Auto
  10. After reading up on 12 volt power in the different threads, I decided to order the 55amp upgrade for my 6300. $215 and free shipping. I'm still under my "Fix and Upgrade" budget so I also ordered a 1600 watt inverter (Whistler pro 1600 from TigerDirect) and remote switch (power for microwave and coffeepot). I'll install the inverter under the seat beside the battery and make/install another "Inverter Power Outlet" above the frig. The microwave will sit on the frig and plug into the Inverter outlet. AND - I found a nice under counter TV/DVD/AM/FM from Coby: http://www.amazon.com/Coby-KTFDVD1093-10-2-Inch-Under-Cabinet/dp/B0013O80NQ This unit can be powered directly from a 12 volt source (hence the need for clean/filtered DC power) I think the only major spending left is a new blower motor for the furnace. (SSSQQQUUUUEEELLLL) (not to bad yet, only at startup and shutdown) John Mc 88 Dolphin 4 Auto
  11. Finished painting the ceiling bath and kitchen area. (Still need to do the trim caulking) Looks very good We used Satin for the ceiling and semi-gloss for the walls. A good quality paint (Lowes Valspar) and a texture roller. The texture came out nice and did a good job of hiding the wallpaper and transition bumps. On a scale of 1 - 10 : Before = 3, After = 8 After we finished, I would consider possible using a light gray for the walls, might match the counter tops carpet, etc. I still need to do above the couch, table and the cabover. 12. Thought I'd share this with the group. I meant to post this a few weeks ago, but wanted to wait until I get a couple photos. So here goes: Right after I bought the ToyHouse I did a quick roof patch just to get me through the winter. A few weeks ago, To my surprise, I noticed I still had some minor leaks (pesky drip once every few minutes) I had removed most of the vent hardware from inside and noticed cracks in each corner of the vents and also about mid way between the corners, just about were the mounting screws would be. As I watched, I seen an occasional drip come through these cracks. As an interim fix, I dried the cracks with a paper towel and dabbed a little silicon sealant in the cracks. This will hold me off until I replace the vents (maybe next weekend) The original vents have a plastic mounting flange and its cracked at every screw location. The vents I'm installing have a metal flange, so this problem shouldn't repeat itself. John Mc 88 Dolphin 4 Auto
  13. I agree that the ToyHouse are probably at their low points, and will probably hold or increase a little as fuel cost go up. I aggressively looked around for about four months. Until I found this one, I personally inspected over 10 units, GMs, Fords and Toyotas, each time I had cash in hand ready to drive it home, But in each of those cases, I found stuff that stopped the sale. My reason for choosing the ToyHouse over the GMs or Fords, was fuel economy. We're planning a 10,000 mile trip to Alaska this spring. Trip plan is $4/gallon average. At 14 mpg, thats 715 gallons at $4/gal = $2860 just in fuel at 7 mpg from a Ford or GM, Double the fuel costs =$5720. What I'm going to save in fuel pays for 1/2 of the ToyHouse. The ToyHouse is just right for my wife and I, has most of the comforts of home, and is small enough to get in and out of most places where a car would fit. John Mc 88 Dolphin 4 Auto
  14. The Zinsser 1-2-3 seems to level a little, The big concern was the transition line between wallpaper and no paper, None problem. I'll keep you posted, we'll probably paint the bath today. John Mc 88 Dolphin 4 Auto
  15. I often wondered about this, so here goes! (I think I'm answering my own question as I think this through, so bear with me) Is it possible that the trans cooler in the radiator (liquid to liquid) could be adding heat to the trans fluid, i.e. the coolant radiator is heating up the trans liquid! Hot engine coolant enters the top of the radiator and is cooled as it flows down. The trans liquid-liquid exchanger is located at the bottom of the radiator, so its probably significantly cooler than the engine 190 deg F. That would be the question, What are the temperatures of the coolant at the top (enter) and bottom (exit) of the radiator. So, back to the original question; A very hot radiator is actually adding heat to the trans) At this point, I think the answer is generally, No. But I think its also important to make sure the aftermarket cooler is downstream of the liquid-liquid cooler, i.e. the Aftermarket cooler should be after the radiator, to provide additional cooling after the fluid leaves the coolant radiator. Does this sound reasonable????? (When I pull the trans pan to change the filter, I'll pop one of the cooler hoses and see what way the fluid is flowing, and make sure its plumbed in this manner) FOLLOWUP QUESTION - Is there such a thing as the trans fluid be to cold??? 16. A couple pictures: 1) The primer covers the wallpaper, ceiling, and the areas were the wallpaper was pulled off. Remove any wallpaper that is not sticking. 2) I'll use a razor knife and cut off the vinyl trim, then re-trim with a bead of dark brown or white caulk. 3) looking rearward, ceiling, bath area, and most of kitchen are primed, (also pocket door and bath closet door. Did not do closet or shower. John Mc 88 Dolphin 4 Auto
  17. All the curtains went into the washing machine - We were afraid that they would disintegrate, but after two gentle cycles, they survived and are clean. (muddy water on the first pass) As for the walls and ceiling!!! The Ceiling is cheap paneling that's pre-finished on one side. The walls have a contact paper stuff on them. So, We spent the day washing the walls and ceiling and peeling as much of the loose contact paper as we could. This all prep for recovering. CONTACT PAPER - We tried the contact paper on the ceiling and the walls, BUT!! The stuff now days doesn't stick worth a darn. We come to the conclusion that if it says; "Easily re positionable", that's a key word for "It doesn't stick worth a darn". HINT to Contact paper company - Make a product that sticks and cannot be re-positioned. put a warning label on it that says "You better get it right the first time, because this stuff is never coming off". THEN YOU'LL SELL YOUR PRODUCT We then tried wallpaper - Forget it. to much prep work Finally, After a couple weeks of experimenting, we decided just to paint After describing the problem to the paint person, She recommended paint everything first with a "Zinsser 1-2-3 primer". This will stick to the glossy ceiling paneling and also the walls that are partial contact paper, as log as they are reasonably clean and free of grease/oils. After that dries, paint with good quality ceiling and wall paints. So, Last night I took down all the light fixtures and ceiling vents and anything else that shouldn't get painted and put on the primer. I started at the back and am working my way forward. Still need to take down all the curtain rods and slides. I left the corner molding in place(the round vinyl stuff that's almost everywhere). I plan on cutting it off with a razor knife, so I wasn't concerned about getting paint on it. When I'm finished painting, I'll cut the round stuff off and then run a bead of dark brown or white caulking in all the corners, kind of like what they do in and around the pocket door. I'll post photos as I finish up. John Mc 88 Dolphin 4 Auto
  18. The leaks seemed to be coming from several places; The connection to the tank (The previous owner actually placed thread sealer on the disconnect threads) The hose fittings (where the hose is crimped onto the fitting) and a small leak in the regulator. I also suspect the hose itself was leaking (microscopic leaks throughout the entire hose.) Cost was about $70. 4 ft hose ($15) 290 2 stage regulator ($25) Tank Adapter (standard left thread to ACME) ($20) plumbing fittings ($10) Project took about 2 hours - mostly cleaning the tank and valve mating surfaces. Outside using 409 and the threads and mating surface - I used a Battery connector wire brush to clean the threads, a green scrubby pad to get up inside and clean the mating surface. Rinse with water and blow dry with air. John Mc 88 Dolphin 4 Auto
  19. During yesterdays warm spell, I worked outside the ToyHouse. While poking around under the hood, I did notice a small radiator on the right side just behind the grill. It an aftermarket Transmission cooler, plumbed in series with the coolant heat exchanger. The cooler is about 6x6 inches and sits in front of the air Conditioner radiator. One less thing to worry about! JOhn Mc 88 Dolphin 4 Auto
  20. Faulty O2 sensor could cause the engine to run rich (inject more fuel than is needed) as the ECU drops back to a default "Limp Home" version of fuel control. I would start by looking at the O2 Sensor. After you replace it, reset the ECU (pull the fuse or disconnect the battery for 60 seconds. ALSO - double check for any coolant consumption. A leaky head gasket could dump antifreeze into a cylinder and the silica in the antifreeze could significantly shorten the life of an O2 sensor. JOhn Mc 88 Dolphin 4 AUTO
  21. Dave; After spending hours Goggling, I had a suspicion it was a Dana. However, I still no leads on any documentation. If you would be so kind to post the documentation, that would be great. I think a lot of the ToyHouses have these, and they probably would work (better) if adjusted properly. I may take the ToyHouse out and play with the gain (sensitivity) and Frequency to see if this will help. I'm still not sure what the Frequency does, but on other units I've played with (Audiovox), there is an adjustment to tell it what the max pulse count will be. If the max pulse count is adjusted to low, it cant count the higher number of pulses it receives when going faster, hence the 59mph max speed (Sounds good in theory) Any help would be appreciated. John Mc 88 Dolphin 4 Auto
  22. I found the cruise control control box while installing the remote starter. The CC does work, but has issues; 1) The highest it be set is 59 mph, If I try and set it higher it drops back to 59. It did a good gob of holding 59, even in hilly country. 2) Its to sensitive on the throttle To fast on needing more and also releasing, it gets into a hunting mode. 3) Brake drops out OK, but when I turn on the turn signals (either one) it drops out also. Attached are a couple photos of the Servo and the Control box, Any help on identifying these and documentation would be greatly appreciated. John Mc 88 Dolphin 4 Auto
  23. 1) Replaced the Propane lose, regulator and modified the tank to accept the new style twist ACME connector. The hose is a little long so I can set a tank outside and connect to it. 2) Installed a Remote Car Starter (Bulldog $39.00) This will serve as my Poor Mans Onan. 3) Cleaned up the frig, I was able to verify it works on Propane. It was turned on 110 but wasn't getting cool. It may not have been leveled good. I also need to see if I can get it to work on 110 ) HOWEVER - I need to see why the piezo lighter doesn't work. I lite the unit from outside 4) Found more info on the cruise control. See other post, I'm looking for any help on wiring. JOhn Mc 88 Dolphin 4 Auto
  24. The original hose was leaking, the previous owner had even went as far as putting thread sealer on the fitting that mates to the tank (I'm not sure how he was able to fill the tank???) (First Photo) Anyway, I wanted to upgrade to the new style hose connector so I can also use those cheap grill tanks as my standby. A photo of the original system and a couple photos of the new installation. The hose is 4 ft long so I can set a tank outside and the hose will reach it. Oh Yah, NO LEAKS  WARNING - DO NOT USE BBQ TANKS ON THEIR SIDE. THEY ARE VERTICAL ONLY. When using a BBQ tank with this setup, set it on the ground and attach the hose.
  25. I've been using PayPay 10 - 12 years. Never had any problems. One Major Caution to you and anyone who uses / plans on using Pay Pal: NEVER - NEVER - NEVER use a PayPal Hyperlink that is provided in any e-mail or from any web site. ( I do use the "Pay Now" on e-bay, but always look at the hyperlinks and Padlock) ALWAYS - enter the PayPal URL into your browser manually, and then check to make sure you have a secure link. Then after PayPal poops up, Verify the "VeriSign" encription (Usually a Locked PadLock icon on your browser) I pass this warning on as I've seen many, many Spoof e-mails and web sites that will attempt to trick you into giving your username/password. My favorite: you'll get an e-mail from what looks like official Pay Pay, Says your account has been frozen and you must re-authenticate to release a recent purchase. You click on the hyperlink (The Hyperlink looks official), The web site looks just like a PayPal web site, You enter your username and password. Your given a message saying thank you, you account has been re-activated. An hour later, you bank account is overdrawn or you get a call from your credit card company that says you card has been overdrawn. Pay Pal will never send anything like this, Neither will any financial institution or bank. Beware. John Mc 88 Dolphin 4 Auto
